I have the common problem that I have seen on here, where the power button continues to work but key board and mouse will not.
I have been through the remove the upper case and check connections, if that does not work what is the next step?

the cable, &/or keyboard. If there's been a liquid spill you should clean the logic board, and could try cleaning the keyboard before replacing it.

No liquid damage, I had found that if I removed the battery and re-seated the ribbon cable that fixed it in the past. This time it has not gone away and so I did the steps to fix it internally. it is both the keyboard and the track pad. Is there a way for me to test if the keyboard is the problem?
If it is both the trackpad and the keyboard wouldn't it be more likely to be a cable is there a way to check the cable with a volt meter?
Replaced the top case flex cable and that has fixed the problem. Thank you for your help. I am no longer scared to fix my mac myself, this is a great site. Powerbookmedic.com is a great site for parts, fyi.

Hi there, now as for your latest question. The answer is NO! It's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to test it with a voltmeter that you may already have. Do this instead, attach a wireless mouse and when it shows active then go ahead and enable the keyboard viewer via the system preference pane. From there you should be able to use the keyboard displayer screen and if everything works then you know for a fact that your keyboard connection is defective. The trackpad itself may also be defective as well, you should use your installation disk to run the "Utility hardware test" and let the machine find the problem for you. Chances are, you need to replace the trackpad alone provided that your keyboard cable has not been compromised in ANY way (nor has the keyboard itself been exposed to any type of a liquid spill). Do understand this, the answers you see are solely depended upon the accuracy of the problem being explained/reported.

So to do the apple hardware test I need to be able to hold down the D key on the keyboard, except that the key board is not working. I am still on OS X, when I open the system preferences, there is a Keyboard & mouse when I click on that it comes up with a keyboard pane that has Key Repeat Rate Delay Until Repeat etc... Is this the pane you are talking about? how will this show me if the keyboard is recognized? I am able to use an external usb mouse and that is the only way I am able to control anything the only button that works is the power button. I have ordered another top case flex cable for A1226, I hope that will fix the problem.

powerbookmedic.com I got the ribbon cable for 24.95 and I had it second day aired to me, it didn't arrive until 5:30pm but I think that is just the UPS in New Hampshire. I am about to put it in so here is hoping that it works.

Congratulations on getting the keyboard working by replacing the flex cable. I'm going thru a rough period where I've had 3 different Macbooks with keyboard/trackpad problems. I replaced 2 entire top cases (2007 Macbooks) and the problem went away, but now it's come back on one of the Macbooks.
Power button works, but keyboard and trackpad don't work once computer has booted.
With the 3rd Macbook, from 2008, it's a slightly different problem: the power button works and the Macbook boots fine, but the keyboard and trackpad don't work; external USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice work. I thought it was a bad keyboard, but the keyboard from this Macbook works on another Macbook; and a working keyboard doesn't work on this Macbook.
So it looks like the Macbook has some problems re. the connection to the logic board. Do you think?
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
I've taken lots of Mac portables apart over the years, but these Macbooks seem to have very fragile keyboard connectors, whether it's the flex cable or the connector on the logic board.
How hard is it to replace the keyboard flex cable?
Where can you get instructions and/or video? Doesn't seem like they have it here - just the entire top case replacement.
I have a 2007 Macbook keyboard that I use when I have to replace keys. It suffered water damage, but all the keys have worked, so I don't know how badly it was damaged. If I could, I'd like to try the flex cable from this keyboard to try to repair the other one. If not, I'd try to find one or two on eBay.

I have the same problem. Keyboards and trackpad do not work. It tries to boot from power button but acts like it is sleeping. Everything was fine until I installed a new wireless mouse. I noticed something odd when it installed its install software. But went into system preferences and saw nothing unusual. The problem came when I shut off for the night and tried to boot up next morning. Now it won't boot bast black screen, no chime and none of the key combinations work because there is no keyboard function. no lights no nothing. I tried an external keyboard and nothing. it is like there is no power going to the USB and keyboard, just the power button which does force shut off. But it doesn't really power on past what looks like sleep mode. Another site mentioned something like a panic mode in the sleep programming but that won't do any good until I get the keyboard working again.
I have a junk spare so if there is a cable or something I need I can pull it off that one..
can anyone confirm that this is the correct part to fix this?

Did you find any instructions for replacing the cable? Did you just wing it on your own? If you could provide instructions and tips it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. I have a Macbook 2.1Ghz from Early 2008, which has a silver trackpad cable.

mine iss a macbook pro, but I used the repair tips on here, the hammer icon on the top. Since I am not sure which Macbook you have the model number should be on the bottom or in the case. I would start at the hammer icon and then use the number to figure out which page from there. Here is the mac screen just pick your device on their and move forward, Mac Repair.
The cable that I got was for the Macbook Pro A1226, you could need a different cable. Once you know your model # then use that to research your parts on http://www.powerbookmedic.com
I would also suggest getting the "Apple Black Nylon Flat Probe Tool (NEW)" it is a helpful little tool to have. I also got some "Orange Anti-Static Tape Strips" to help put it all back together. Hope this is a good starting place and best of luck.
Hello I have problem with my mbp a1286. I have similar issue with keyboard and trackpad like yours but mine has additional problem with the USB devices not detected while connected. Any idea how to fix it? Other than the top case flex cable what should I fix?
My keyboard and pad stopped working after hooking up the portable to my large monitor and external keyboard - not the first time, been doing this for years with THIS computer -
anyway, I just took out the battery for a couple of seconds, placed it back in, and it's now working fine!!

I don't recommend http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ .... They are charging $54 for a new trackpad cable .... you can get these on ebay for $10-15 new. This site is too overpriced. Shop around.

You posted a good question. My 2.4 GHz. Macbook Pro A1260 now has that problem too. I was told by a Clickaway service center here in CA, that it gets caused by the Lithium-Ion battery getting hot from it's older age, and being over charged, that caused the battery to get fat on it's top and bottom sides. The enlarged upper side presses against the board, next to the battery, that controls the keyboard, track pad and mouse button. They said that the only way to fix this is to get a replacement upper case. I haven't tried it yet.
Did you or anyone else try it?
