Why did my internal keyboard and trackpad stop working?

So this issue started like a month ago and I have tried the SMC reboot, it somehow works for a week. Starting from that, it doesn't work anymore and i have sent to the apple store for support ysterday. They do some checks and somehow the keyboard and the trackpad works again. However when i got home, the same issue happen again. Right now I have to use a USB keyboard and magic mouse just in order to get my computer to work.

I have the same issue, trackpad and power button are still working though.

Did you manage to find a solution?

Aziz - I would follow Mayer's recommendation here and get the AppleCare extended if you can (then get it fixed afterwards). Otherwise, it's a very expensive repair as it likely needs a new battery as it likely swelled pressing from below which causes the keyboard to fail.

If you're lucky its still under warranty (within a month of expiring will also work). Apple did have a few battery issues which they did cover under an extended warranty program. But that only works if you didn't get the system wet.

Hi Dan and thanks for your answer, my warranty is actually over and i'm living abroad, so no apple service around.

I read in another post that the battery is discharged, the keyboard might work back?? does this make sense?

Can I change the battery myself if I can order one?

How expensive is the repair we are talking about?

To replace the battery review this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Battery Replacement.

To prove its the battery you can try placing your battery in the refrigerator (not the freezer) to let it cool down. This will reduce the swelling to a point your keyboard should start to work again. If not the keyboard cable maybe damaged which leads to the trackpad from the keyboard from the swelling. Do use a plastic bag to cover your system tightly before you put it in the refg. and if you are in a very humid location let it sit still in the bag for a bit to let it warm up you don't want condensation to damage your system.

You might try looking at Apples web site to see whats near you. Apple has quite a few stores now and they also list authorized service centers as well.

I am in Tunisia and I might need to get my laptop to france for a replacement

I am not very confident putting my laptop in the fridge, even with a plastic bag around, if I switch of overnight, unplugged, shouldn't work as well?

If it still under warranty, take out AppleCare and extend your warranty for two years. I doubt the problem is going to go away on its own, Then take it back to Apple and get it fixed.

If it is out of warranty, you may want to look at the connector where the cable coming from the trackpad and the keyboard connect to the main mother board.

I've seen a few with crud on the keyboard connector, and cleaning (once it also needed reflowing the connections) fixed it.

I may be wrong, but I think at the time we are writing this, Apple is facing an issue with these keyboard and trackpad failures, and requiring Apple service providers to run a diagnostic test on all laptops they receive (regardless of reason they came in for) while the laptop is connected to a server that feeds the info back to Apple. A program may be in the making.

Most likely the trackpad cable. On the 2015 models, if the trackpad cable is not plugged into the logic board, the keyboard and trackpad will not work. I have come across a few where the keyboard and trackpad will intermittently not work, reboot usually temporarily fixes it, but in all cases the trackpad cable has been the issue. Sometimes the cable looks fine, sometimes it has slight liquid damage.

It is very easy to replace (remove bottom cover, disconnect battery, then disconnect the cable) and it is very cheap. Try this first, and it should sort out your problem.

I have the same issue with my computer, where can I buy the cable??

из

eBay, search for A1502 2015 trackpad cable. Make sure the one you're ordering looks the same as your old one (plug in connector, not slide in zif connector).

First of all @reecee thanks a lot for your fantastic answers. I found them extremely helpful. What tools (screwdrivers etc.) will I need to open the Macbook back cover and replace the trackpad cable?

из

You'll need a pentalobe screwdriver (think it's 1.8mm or 1.2mm, check iFixit guide to find out) and a T5 screwdriver for trackpad cable shield screws

Hello, I have the same problem but even after I changed the trackpad cable after 2 months the trackpad and keyboard not worked again. Does anyone have any idea what causes the problem?

Hello, I just had the same issue this month. The keyboard and the trackpad both stopped working and the only was to fix it was to reboot. I also noticed in the log the message:

  • Error: AppleHSSPIController::doSPITransfer NAK received from device followed every time by
  • Error: AppleHSSPIController::doSPITransfer CRC from device was invalid: compu... and sometimes
  • Error: AppleHSSPIController::InterruptOccurred Failed to transfer interrupt data with Err (0x00002eb)

My MBP Early 2015 was still under warranty and the support told me it was related to a connector between the trackpad and the keyboard formally called "SVC,CABLE,IPD FLEX,HA COPPER,13" MBP" on the invoice. The Apple's Genius ran some diagnostic tests but he show me the results and everything was 100% fine, including the top case.

The repair costs 89€ in France (10€ for the cable itself, 79€ for the hardware fix). Hopefully the repair only takes up to 48 hours (or so they told me, it's been around 5 hours and I'm patiently waiting, I already brought my MBP for other issues and the repairs were fast).

Thanks! now I definitely know that I have the exact same problem! In my case, it's even deterministically reproducible whenever I put some slight pressure under the center of the lowercase. I can basically enable/disable trackpad+keyboard with a slight touch of a hand...

For those who stumble upon this message, I found these logs using the "Console" app, start streaming log messages, and pressed the bottom of my laptop as I explained above.

Spilled coffee on my mac, brought my mac to the store and it came out fine. Used it for more than a year and out of nowhere trackpad and keyboard working intermittently.

Same issue and they only replaced IPD FLEX CABLE. Funny because Apple store in the Philippinrs said that they also have to change battery and topcase but when diagnosed here in China, they only said the IPD FLEX CABLE is the only thing they changed. They saved me money but not 100% sure if the problem pops up again. Still have to retrieve my MacBook pro 2015 retina, this week.

Crud builds up, damaging the cable, which is tightly sandwiched between the bottom case and the batteries. Keep your work area clean!

Had the same problem with my MacBook Pro 13". It started with my trackpad failing, but after restarting the computer it would work again, or after leaving it cool down. Still, as time passed by, it stopped working at all and the keyboard started to fail as well, so I was left without trackpad nor keyboard to use my Mac. Sadly, the problem started after the warranty expired and I was living in Colombia (a country with limited Apple support). I decided to wait until I came back to US and scheduled an appointment. They charged me about 96usd, 79usd for the technical support and 10.23usd for the hardware cable ("SVC,CABLE,IPD FLEX,HA COPPER,13" MBP" - Part Number: 923-01376), plus tax. It started working perfect immediately and the tech guy just took like 15 minutes to do the repair. That even fixed a problem my computer had of not sleeping, probably because of the malfunction of the keyboard and the external mouse, can't really tell why. But still, the fix is recent so I'll wait a few months to know if the issue is really fixed. I didn't want to mess with the hardware myself, specially not knowing what the problem was neither the exact part to replace... but if someone can't get to an Apple store and have this same problem, they should just look carefully for the part on eBay or somewhere else, buy the tools (special screwdrivers for Macs) and change that cable themselves.
