MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Shuts down and restarts randomly while plugged in

Need some assistance with my Macbook Pro 15'' Mid 2010.

The computer has a nasty habit that has developed out of the blue where it shuts down and restarts whether it is running off of power supply or battery supply.

It occurs more often when running off of just battery supply, even with the charge at full. What can I try to make this situation go away?

Here's the crash Report: Crash Report

Some of the information above regarding the .com.apple extensions were not permitted as they were pegged as spam. Provided as much as the crash report as possible.

The sequence of events that most often occurs is the computer will crash without warning. It will attempt to boot. Makes it to the login grey screen. Crashes again... and then will allow me to put in my password and restart.

Mac Specs:

  • MacBook Pro 15'' Mid 2010.
  • OS X El Capitan V. 10.11.6
  • Processor: 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
  • Memory: 8 Gb 1067 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB

Computer background:

  • I am the original owner
  • No drops or fluid spills.

I replaced the hard drive with a Samsung 250 GB SSD last christmas.

I also replaced the original RAM 4 GB to 8 GB

The computer recently started having problems approximately 2 months ago. I have since reformatted the computer, and the problems persist. I have downloaded Coconut battery which gives the following stats:

  • Design Capacity: 7200 mAh
  • Cycle Count: 283
  • OS X Battery Status: Good
  • Battery Temp: 35.5 C
  • Charing with 21.02 Watts

(While plugged into power adapter)

According to TG Pro:

  • Battery sensor 1 & 2: 31 & 30 C
  • Battery Sensor Max: 36 C
  • Heatpipe Outgoing Air: 36 C
  • Left Heatsink Proximity 48 C
  • Platform Controller Hub Die 59 C
  • Right Heat sink Proximity: 48 C
  • Memory Controller: 59 C
  • Palm Rest Proximity 32 C
  • DC In Proximity: 55 C

Need some help with where to start. I've never encountered this problem before, and not sure what action to take next. I've read several articles talking about overheating issues, logic board issues and other such problems, but not sure if these actually apply to my situation.

The temperature does not seem likely as the computer does not seem very warm via touch or when utilizing TG Pro or Coconut Battery.

I'm unfamiliar with the logic board issues.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your time and help in advance!

Sorry this post was so convoluted.

The character count and spam blocker of this website was quite the nuisance when trying to post and give adequate information about the problem I'm having.

Update (12/04/2016)

So it seems like my problem may lie in the graphics card itself. I downloaded a program called gfxCardStatus 1.8.1 and am currently forcing my computer to run off of the intel card only. For the moment this seems to have solved my issues. Time will tell if this will keep it from occurring...

Is a repair on almost 7 year old computer actually worth it? To me the computer runs as fast as I need it to. I have updated with a SSD HD and installed the "max" 8 GB of RAM. The most taxing thing I do with my computer is record and edit audio in Logic Pro.

I have been looking at new computers prior to finding the program I previously discussed and the 2016 Macbook Pros do not seem that impressive. Have the 2015 MBPs seemed to be pretty reliable?

@jthzp9 - Review the Crash Report I created using your snippets. You may want to create a fresh one.

Next time I think you'll find attaching a PDF file is a lot easier than trying to paste the elements as comments ;-}

Click on the far right icon in text box to get to the media manager.

If you can live with the reboots then you should get more years out of your MBP. Mine does the exact same thing, same crash report. However, it only does it when I put the computer to sleep and upon opening it up again it would crash and reboot. After that I am able to work all day long without crashes.

Can you please link to the exact video that solves the problem from that youtube channel? Thank you.

Guys,

What I have done is more of a bandage than a true fix of the issue but after researching the subject, this was the best solution to keep my computer running for as long as possible without doing any major surgery to the motherboard and graphics card.

Download gFx CardStatus v 1.8.1, I know there is a newer version out there, but this one seems to work best for me. Every time I start my computer I make sure that the app is enabled and force my computer into Intel Only mode. I have issues when it is in the dynamic switching or Nvidia modes.

I am able to still perform all of the functions that I originally used the computer for, granted I never used it for video/photo editing.

Again, this is not a permanent fix. However, it does help get a bit more longevity out of the computer.

This is actually a very disappointing defect from Apple and hope in the future they consider higher quality components and improved structural design.

you are da bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this werked

Oh my.. this saved my machine thank you!! **I actually downloaded it and stupidly updated it to the latest version-big mistake. The version that works as you mentioned is this one 1.8.1. Best!

из

I have the same issue and indeed the fix with the gFX does work but not always. I does toggle sometimes. I have fixed the issue as follows , and that fully prevents the issue with video card and no longer reboots or crashes. Here is how:

1.) Install the gFX Card Status app

2.) Set it to Integrated only

3.) Open keynote and create a slide, insert a picture into the slide

4.) Leave keynote open at all times.

Your mac will no longer reboot as keynote forces the mode to be fixed for the video cards..

Does anyone know where to find gFx CardStatus v 1.8.1 from a TRUSTWORTHY download site? I went to the programmers page and it appears to be only the latest versions available, whereas folks in here are saying it needs to be v 1.8.1. Saw v 1.8.1 on a couple of sites but when you go to download them it isn't clear which version you are actually getting and I don't know which sites are even trustworthy. Wish I could get it from the original programmer.

Hey Jared, this is sadly a common problem with A1286 15" MacBook Pros from 2010 - I have an exact same MacBook Pro with the exact same problem :(

Anyway, the issue is most likely caused by a faulty capacitor on the motherboard. There is a voltage rail that supplies the frame-buffer, which acts as a short-term memory bank for the graphics processor. One of the decoupling capacitors on this voltage rail is a poly-tanalum capacitor, which isn't very reliable when subjected to many heat cycles. This results in the frame buffer voltage rail dropping in voltage every once in a while. If the GPU's voltage drops along this voltage rail, it stops working, resulting in the kernel panic, and sudden restart.

You can either get a new motherboard and install it, or you can get the board repair and pay less. This isn't an easily diagnosable issue though, due to it's intermittency and the fact that most people think the "GPU" is at fault. One thing to note though, is that "reflowing" the graphics chip with heat (which is a "repair" that many places do) will temporarily keep the issue from happening, but is not a proper fix as the issue will conveniently come back again after your warrantee expires. If you do go the board repair route, make sure that they know what they're doing.

If you're feeling ambitious and are comfortable with rework and soldering equipment, you can replace this capacitor and see if the problem goes away.

@jthzp9 This is likely the cause. The capacitor in question is C9560, which fails due to the same reason as C7771 (on 2008 models). Replace this and it should resolve your issue

Hi Jared, I have the same problem - but it occurs mostly while working in Logic... does this happen to you as well? The crash/restart happens when the discrete graphics processor gets a lot of work, a likely moment for overheating it seems. Under 10.6.8 it did not happen often and/or was kept on control by gfxCardStatus, but under Mavericks it happens now about every hour. It seems that Logic forces the use of the discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card. My MacBook 6,2 runs beautifully, otherwise.

Anyway, thanks so much to Sam Freeman and Reece for pointing to a solution, finally!! I hope to hear about a successful repair...

I have never actually performed this repair..until last night! I had a 2010 15" 2.4GHz lying around that had the kernel panicking issue, and would die within 5 minutes when running Furmark, an app the stresses the GPU. I replaced the capacitor C9560 with another 330µF capacitor from a donor board that was not a tantalum capacitor, and so far, the computer has been running smoothly. It has been running Furmark for over 5 hours with no issues!

Nice one Sam :) Just did another one of these a couple of days ago, where the customer was told it was a GPU issue. Unfortunately it is a very common issue...

This is a known problem from Apple. I made a program to fix this issue. You can check it out here, it's free and open-source : https://github.com/julian-poidevin/MBPMi...

hello to all.

I just bought a 2010 MacBook Pro 15' at a pawnshop and said no password.

I was able to get APPLE customer care to unlock and download Sierra.

Just a couple of days ago it has been shutting of then starting up with no warning.

did your work on your own MACs work???

Update (06/14/2017)

please send me a picture of the C9560 and one of the 330uF to identify what needs to be removed and what needs to be installed.

What I looked up doesn't look like anything on the laptop circuit board/s.

thanks!

My MacBook Pro 15" had the same problem, and would constantly shut down intermittently. I found a local computer repair centre and replaced the capacitor C9560 which needs to be replaced with another 330uF capacitor.

I have not any problems since and it only cost me $ 46.00.

There is a fix by MBPMid2010_GPUFix-master. Compile with Qt and run.

Problem fixed! :-)

I had the same exact problem with rebooting. It appears that Apple used a week capacitor on the motherboard that causes the rebooting. I sent my MAC to The Rossman Repair Group in NYC and they replaced the capacitor. My MAC has not rebooted since the repair. The cost was $200.
