Can flickering LCD Monitor Sharp LL-172G-B be repaired?

High quality 17" LCD monitor, solidly built with cast aluminum height-adjustable stand. Has worked well for years, but just started flickering exactly like a typical fluorescent bulb at the end of its life. Probably the backlight fluorescent tube, but could be its power supply.

I hate to throw out such a quality piece of electronics, especially when I compare it with the flimsy plastic new ones.

It looks as if the monitor would be easy to open up (4 phillips screws). But there is no point unless it is possible to replace the failing part, very likely a cold cathode fluorescent tube. I'm not afraid to unsolder an old one and solder in new if that turns out to be needed; I've done a lot of electronic soldering.

Thanks for the pointer. I have sent a query to an advertiser on that site who sells CCFL tubes for many LCD monitors. Mine is not listed on their web site, but one of their tubes might fit.

Now have a source for a CCFL tube for $12 plus shipping (but their shipping calculator does not cover Canada).

So I removed the stand (4 bolts) and the 4 corner bolts on the main monitor case. It looks as if the beige back cover should just lift off but it is rock solidly attached without the slightest wiggle anywhere. FIts the black front frame of the LCD with no gaps where even a sharp knife can be inserted. There could be more screws under the large model number sticker, but there are no depressions or bumps that can be detected from running my fingers over it.

Without a service manual there is probably no way to find the trick of getting into this beast. And if I can't open it there is no point buying any parts.

By the way, the "service manual" your reply points to seems to be the user manual not the service manual. I could not find a service manual online.

I just (in the last hour) tore apart an LCD that a user complained was flickering, then eventually died outright. I opened it expecting to see bulging capacitors and once I got to the power supply board I saw...... Bulging capacitors. I'd open that thing up and see what's going on on the high-voltage side, it's extremely likely that the problem can be fixed with under $10 worth of capacitors.

Thanks for that suggestion. Yes, it could be the power supply not the bulb since the rated lifetime of the bulb is much longer than the hours this monitor has been used.

If I can open the inner metal case successfully I will check.
