Wifi not working after digitizer replacement

Hi I have a RCA VOYAGER and the digitizer on it broke, well I am goodwith these things so I replaced it myself in the way there was a grey wire soldered to the tablet and attached with some green and orange piece on the other side not thinking I snipped it

And everything worked fine tablet works everything does ... Except THE WIFI

So thinking that was the aantennai snipped I got another wire exactly like that from another tablet I have fixed and soldered it into place!! This one was a bit longer but it soldered where the other one was and had the pieceof green and orange on it! But now the tablet wifi still doesn't work, please help and fast thanks!

Hi @androidfixitguy ,

Are you sure that you got the antenna length correct and if so is it connected correctly? Also with the incorrect length you will not get the signal because the antenna is not "tuned" to the correct frequency.

I cannot find any information on any of the RCA tablets shown on You Tube videos which show the same WiFI antenna connection that you have got setup, i.e. long antenna wire connected at both ends. The ones with a long antenna, have it connected at one end only on the pcb and the other end laid in the case around to the back of the battery and taped down, as also shown in most of the RCA tablet teardowns in this Ifixit link,

RCA Tablet

The ones with a short antenna do have it connected at both ends as shown in the image below taken from an Ifixit repair guide, for a RCA Voyager II which shows how the antenna is connected and also its' length.

What is really weird is that your board looks the same but different to the board in the image in this answer. For a start there is no copper? terminal strip next to the antenna connection on your board whereas there is in the other picture. Which may be right as yours is a Voyager model and not a Voyager II.

What is the full model number of your Voyager?

Update (01/29/2017)

Hi @androidfixitguy,

Perhaps I wasn't clear when I said 2 wires. Sorry if I'm wrong but I meant that the WiFi antenna cable has 2 wires in it. The centre wire as the antenna and the outer layer as the shield.

If it is only has the one wire in the cable (make sure that there is no braided layer wrapped around under the cable sheath) I would follow @pccheese advice and try it and also clean up the circuit board connections. See the yellow circle in image. It seems as though there are 2 connection points there. I think that it should be the one on the left as shown but not as it appears touching the one on the right.

In the original photo you posted why did you connect it to the point shown by green/red box and then connect it to the red box if it was a long wire?

To my mind it should either be a short wire between the red/green boxes as per the first image above or a long wire from the yellow circle but only the one connection point

Hi @androidfixitguy

The image above is for a RCT6773W22 taken from step 9 in this link RCA Voyager II RCT6773W22 Disassembly.

My eyes aren't what they used to be so I am not sure if the antenna cable is 2 wires or 1 when you look at the connection on the right of the picture as there seem to be 2 connection points. It may be that it is the "antenna wire" plus a "shield" wire but that is just a guess. You may be able to see it better. The antenna length is actually quite small for 2.4GHZ it is only 28-32mm long if using 1/4 wavelength and is "exposed" The rest of the lead is just used to extend it to a better position and shield it from EMI etc back to the WiFi chip. Also ensure if it is two wires that the "antenna" wire (the middle wire if it is a wire and shield) is the one going to the chip on the connection at the other end

@jayeff

OK thank you it's only one wire in my tablet...

I did what you said since I replaced it with a long antenna and put it by the battery.

I get wifi was able to download a game

But I only get it whe purtdy close to the router

Also the screen towards the bottom when hholding it horizontally only works part of the time since I moved the antenna...

Any ideas

@pccheese

Or

@jayeff

??

Try disconnecting the antenna to see if it changes the signal. It could be you didn't attach it correctly, and it isn't helping. An antenna only boosts a signal.

@pccheese

What about the screen glitch thing?
