High heat on left side. Freezes and won't start sometimes.

white MacBook Core 2 Duo 2007 2Ghz

I dropped (yes, I hate to admit it) my macbook a few weeks ago. 2Ghz white, 2 gb ram, 500 gb HD, running Leopard.

Most of the time it will come on and function fairly normally. However, it will without warning freeze and the only thing to do is hold down the power button and leave it alone for a while.

When I return to it and try to turn it on, it will usually take several times of pushing the power button to get it to start. It will then function until, I am guessing, it gets too hot then freezes.

When I have airport on, and am doing things on the internet that is when the bottom left side of the case is the hottest. And, that is when it freezes most often. I was using Garageband the other day and it froze after about 5 minutes. Annoying.

I've taken it apart down to looking at the logic board and I've replaced the thermal grease which helped with the heat on the processor, but not the left side. I also did the SMC reset.

Any hints or helps appreciated. Really need this thing to work right! Don't have the money for a new one right now!!!

Check

that the RAM is fully seated - straight across and it can't be pushed in any farther.

From your boot disk run Tools->Disk Utility->Disk First Aid:Repair Disk this could could turn up any hard drive problems.

If this answer is acceptable please return and mark it.

Good Luck,

N.

Fans run at seemingly normal levels.

Checked the memory. It's properly seated.

Just ran disk utility and repair disk, says that the disk is okay.

The computer is still getting really hot on the left side -right around the USB plugs and the tab, caps lock, shift keys. It froze up tonight once while I had a USB mouse plugged in.

didn't say it before --thanks for the help.

I wouldn't be that quick to blame the drop for your problems. Tear it down and replace the thermal paste and clean the vents out: MacBook Core 2 Duo Heat Sink Replacement

I've cleaned the fan, and heat sink vents, and replaced the thermal paste. It's still doing it and wasn't doing it before the drop. The major heat isn't over the processor. It is hottest over where the airport card and the USB plugs.

You may have a shorting wire from the drop. This would greatly decrease your time while running on just the battery. How's your battery time?

It's a new battery and I haven't been able to keep it running simply on the battery without it freezing up. The genius at the apple store hooked it up to their diagnostics and said the temperature sensors weren't working.... thus it's not sure what the temp is, so, when it decides it's too hot -boom, freeze-o-matic.

Do you know if the heatsink contains all the thermal sensors? or are they separate? That's a relatively 'easy' thing to fix if I can just replace the heatsink.
