Keyboard and trackpad are unreponsive?

For some reason my macbook keyboard and trackpad are completely non-responsive. I know for a fact that the keyboard and trackpad are not the problem.

Here are some other things I have tried:

1) External keyboard and mouse work perfectly fine. I can log into OS X and everything functions normally with an external keyboard and mouse.

2) I performed an SMC reset using the built in keyboard. As I said, I know the keyboard is good.

3) I can not reset the PRAM using the built in keyboard. I can reset the PRAM with the external keyboard.

4) I have tried to leave the Macbook working till the battery dies then leave it for one night without charging and afterwards restarting it with power supply plugged in and they worked but afterwards they in s random startup they return unresponsive (I have tried this for two times and worked and I trying my third time now)

Please don't fixate on replacing the keyboard and trackpad.

The keyboard works before the chime (SMC reset) and does not work after the chime (can not reset PRAM). It seems like the logic board is turning off the keyboard when it chimes. Not sure what could cause this. Does anyone have any ideas?

I had the same problem and solved it by simply holding down the power button till the computer switched off, then turning it on again so it went into recovery mode and voila it just worked!

из

I had the same problem and solved it. I connected an external keyboard and a mouse and it worked fine, meaning the usb drives have no problem connecting. Then I went into the System Preferences > Startup Disk > unlocked with user password > clicked the internal Macintosh HD and restarted. After it rebooted, trackpad and keyboard worked fine.

I've previously tried the recovery mode and PRAM reset several times and it did not work. Actually, I've ran into this problem twice before and had the Apple Store replace my entire hard drive and all, and when this happened once again, I was really fed up. Anyways, I hope this solves your problem.

This type of issue can happen on Windows systems due to virus infection.. I'm not familiar with Mac Systems but if you think this advice could help give it a try. The specific device driver gets infected and USB external input devices use a generic driver so that could explain why external input devices work.

из

Hi! I just runned into the same problem ... thanks to the posts above I realized that the reason why my keyboard was no longer working, it was just the trackpad being mechanically blocked ... a simple mechanical push, a bit stronger than usual (after a couple of trials) worked out the issue!

из

Thanks, Myoungah - this fixed my current issue with the keyboard and also a months' long non-working trackpad. Apple Genius bar said I'd have to get a new module to fix that, but your solution fixed them both!

Replace the trackpad cable. This commonly goes bad on 2015 13" models, and causes intermittent problems with both the keyboard and trackpad (trackpad needs to be recognised in order for the keyboard to work on this model).

Part is £10 and takes 5 minutes to replace

Thanks a lot I will try this but chow can I prevent this from happening one more time or what is the cause of the problem in the cable

из

@afalah I believe it is caused by the way the cable is being bent where it is plugged into the trackpad (you will see when opening, it bends back on itself), similar to 13" 2009-2012 hard drive cable issues. They do this since the cable is otherwise too long to fit along the top of the battery nicely.

Not entirely sure though, this issue is very common but not spoken about often, since it causes issues with both the trackpad and keyboard, so people assume it is caused by liquid damage, when it isn't.

из

Hello from Yangon, Myanmar. I have got same issue. How can I deliver my laptop to fix.

из

You will have to find someone who can fix this in your area. It is a very easy repair, you just remove the bottom 10 screws, disconnect the battery, unscrew the 2 T5 screws for the trackpad cable shield, then remove the trackpad cable.

из

@reece I believe you are correct. The way the cable is bent at the trackpad end, is just dumb. It seems the cable is simply 1-2mm to long. I don't get it.. But I have experienced many week components in different macbook models. It always seems to be the same part that fails.

I have the problem with Trackpad and Keyboard not working on a customer's a1502.. Before I go replacing any ribbon cable(s) for a Trackpad or otherwise, can ANYONE answer this..?

Why do both Keyboard and Trackpad work flawlessly outside of Sierra.? Pick ANY Linux distribution - I have 5-7 variants - and boot up to find KB and Trackpad ALWAYS working, ALL the time, without stopping or failing to work.. Thx

This should be a software issue then, I feel. I don't have any Linux distros installed otherwise would have tried this.

из

Hi Ruben, I am having exactly the same issue as you. I have a MacBook Pro 2015 on High Sierra. When I boot with Ubuntu trackpad and keyboard works perfectly. When I reboot with High Sierra both the keyboard and trackpad not responding.

I start to believe that the problem is with the ribbon like Axel is suggesting, however the fact that the keyboard and trackpad is working with Ubuntu is confusing me a little.

из

this is pretty simple. And this is Hardware.

Trackpad and Keyboard have "legacy" usb interface which works in Linux. it is blacklisted in OsX system, and that's why when the serial interface fails, it still works in another system.

here's useful video with full explanation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geGmC1xI...

из

^^^^ this!

My question - has anybody managed to get a USB interface driver for the built-in trackpad/keyboard to work in Mac OS? and/or was this USB driver support enabled in previous OS X versions?

I've been researching this problem for a good year. I can use keyboard and touchpad in the Ubuntu dual boot and within the EFI boot menu (boot holding Option key down). But in Mac OS, nada!!

из

Different OS's access the hardware differently! I've often see this effect where MS Windows works and macOS doesn't. While we would assume it's software its not that simple! As the handshake to the keyboard and trackpad/touchpad is dependent on firmware and hardware handshake which is the case here.

I had the same problem. It started when I forgot my charger at home and borrowed a MacBook Air charger. A day later the keyboard and trackpad had stopped working. I used an external keyboard and mouse until I have drained the battery. I opened the computer and tried clicking the trackpad cable in place. A day later I got back my charger and the the keyboard and trackpad worked like a charm again.

So I do not know it the problem was me charging the computer with the wrong cable or if the cable had been misplaced or a combination of the both.

EDIT: Since I wrote this post the keyboard and trackpad have stopped working a few more times. But now I have found the solution to my problem. I am pretty sure it is the trackpad connector that there is something wrong with. Disconnecting and reconnection the connector (see step 17 in this guide: MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 Trackpad Replacement) have fixed the problem. I have also bought a new cable and will install that in my computer when it arrives.

That's very interesting, because the same thing happened to me when I used a Macbook Air charger as well. Why would it cause this problem?

Anyways, is your laptop fine now?

из

@double dee - The issue is the way the charger communicates with the system. Basically the charger needs to tell the system what it is. If it fails to do that properly then the battery can be incorrectly charged which then can cause the battery to swell up pressing on the cable! This is often a sigh the battery is do to be replaced. I would strongly recommend you install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question in a fresh question so we can help you with your problem.

I had a similar problem and was trying to hard SMC reset by opening the Macbook pro and unplugging the battery. This did not help, but after trying this I unplugged the trackpad cable and keyboard cables then plugged them back and it worked! I suspect a loose connection with one of them.

@afalah Did replacing the flex cable for trackpad resolved your issue? Please tell

Replacing the cable is one of the first things I do given the cost is so low trackpad cable for 13" A1502 2015 Retina Macbook Pro if the cable gets damaged it messes up the internal USB bus which the keyboard shares.

But if that doesn't solve it you likely had a liquid spill into the keyboard and trackpad and will need a new uppercase assembly MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) Upper Case Assembly which is the easiest or replacing the keyboard MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2013-Early 2015) Keyboard as well as the MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) Trackpad and then you still have to deal with the battery which is glued in and given the systems age likely needs replacing as well MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) Battery. Collectively this is a lot of labor as well so the full assembly is cheaper even if the battery it has (used) is getting up there.

Hi all,

a quick question to everybody who have replaced the flex cable and had normal functionality afterwards.

I would like to know if the trackpad still had its click response (force touch or whatever you call it) even though it didn't work?

I ordered a replacement flex cable off of Amazon and after installing it my keyboard and trackpad are still unresponsive. BUT when I click the trackpad, I don't even get a vibrating response telling me it registered my click. When I put the old cable in though, the trackpad and keyboard don't recognise any movement, but the trackpad recognise my clicks and gives a response by vibrating.

Now I'm not sure if the replacement cable is broken or if my issue lies somewhere else.

Greatly appreciate any response!

Yes the click response is a dome switch so you will feel it as it alters its state. Think how a you can click some bottle caps which make a sound this is the same effect here (just smaller)

Hey I am having a similar issue. My keyboard stopped working but my trackpad is still working fine. I took it to a repair place and they said that putting in a new keyboard did not fix the issue. They now want to replace the logic part on the mother board and reprogram it. I told them that it could be the cable for the track pad and they said that when they swapped the mother board the keyboard worked fine so it has to be the mother board. When i plugged in an external keyboard, it also didn't work. Not sure what to do. Should I still try to replace the trackpad cable?

Your problem is not similar, not even close. If trackpad cable was the problem, tp and kb would not work. If trackpad works, only keyboard doesn´t, then it´s not tp cable.

This is probably a defect on motherboard, the keyboard controller ic. Take it to a repair shop that fixes motherboard, instead of one that only replaces it.

I performed SMC, PRAM, NVRAM resets.

When I did a SMC reset keyboard and trackpad worked temporarily.

After a while keyboard and trackpad stopped working AGAIN. After the reset still doesn’t work. Opened in safe mode. Installed windows, I tried it all and it didn’t work. My question is simple.

If the cable really is broken then why did it work when I did a SMC reset?

Another question is- When I was installing windows on my computer for 2-5 seconds the trackpad worked. Then it stopped again. Why did my trackpad work on windows temporarily if the cable really is broken?

Another question- Why is the computer working fine on ubuntu linux 20.10 if the cable really is broken?

That’s all thank you. (Trying to fix my old mac in quarantine)

It’s 2021 and ive had this issue for at least a year on my MacBook Pro 15inch 2015 model.

the trackpad often keyboard as well, stops working. This can be when I’m in the middle of doing something or when I have left the Mac on standby whether this be with the lid closed or not.

sometimes it fixes itself when I reset the SMC, sometimes when I just restart it and sometimes it literally takes about 15 resets including the SMC.

it’s such a random issue with out anything clear about what’s causing it other than software updates. I’ve updated a few times now from high Sierra to Catalina and problem is still apparent. I never had the issue before the high Sierra update so I assume it’s this.

if anybody has any ideas or heard anything from Apple or a repair shop please let me know!!!

Keyboards do wear-out and sadly the ribbon cable which crosses over the battery often gets damaged.

из

I changed the trackpad cable as @reecee suggested but this made the problem worse :/ The mac went from detecting the keyboard and trackpad for a short while when first starting the mac, to not detecting the trackpad and keyboard at all and going into kernel panic and restarts constantly :/ I’m not quite sure how to go about fixing this really as the computer is now pretty much unusable.

What I don't see mentioned here is that this problem can also be caused by a defective keyboard IC on the board. A broken/bad touchpad cable can cause this because it shorts the IC. If replacing the cable doesn't help and there's no kb and/or touchpad response even when booted from usb, this is your most likely cause. Replace the IC (advanced microsoldering repair) and the touchpad flex cable.

For me it threw the laptop into an unrecoverable kernel panic, so I guess that's a no from me.
