Head unit says NO TAPE when I use a cassette tape adapter.

When I insert a cassette tape adapter to use with my phone, the head unit displays NO TAPE. I bought a new cassette adapter and said the same thing. Is there a way to fix it?

Hi,

Does an ordinary cassette tape work in the head unit or does it also say no tape?

If it doesn't work either then there is a problem with the cassette deck in the head unit.

What is the year, make and model of the car?

Is it a stock or after market head unit?

I have the same problem in a 2002 Mazda MPV ES with stock radio. There was a tape stuck in it when I got it, but I easily removed that by taking the face off and prying it out. Brand new adapter, but player doesn't recognize that it is there. Both situations got, "No Tape"

Advice?

This is a problem with a lot of tape players that try to be too high tech. Some cassette players will try to find the actual plastic tape in the adapter, or use some other detection method to make sure a tape has been inserted properly so that it will not accidentally damage itself or your cassette. This leads to false negatives. The GM cassette players such as those in Chevy's from the 90s do this as well.

My suggestion is find a different adapter. Use Amazon or similar reviews to gauge the compatibility of the adapter.

Hi, I had the same problem but managed to fix it a lot simpler than anticipated. My car is a 1.6 VW golf.

I started by making some ‘keys’ out of an old debit card to be able to unlock the radio / cassette fixture and pull it out of the main body. I then unplugged the antenna and the three cables to the left at the back of the radio box. Each cable had 3 subsequent cables leading into each main cable. All I did was u plug everything, and then plug in one at a time again, trying the cassette function at each plug in. After everything was back in place, the cassette player began to read the converter I had originally intended to use and everything worked fine. Hope this helps :)
