HDMI audio has never worked

Block Image

A couple of years ago, I purchased an ASUS R556LA laptop and I tried to watch a video through my TV via the HDMI connection and the video is displayed but no audio. I have tried a number of things from researching this issue (including rebooting laptop while connected) and still nothing. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hello Dan,

thanks for your questions. I wonder to know if your Asus computer has been repaired.

I am waiting for your answer.

thanks in advance.

YES, it's been to ASUS repair on a few occasions with the first being within the first month. Each time they simply reinstall Windows and I still end up with the same problems as I had before and I have given up on them caring one bit about fixing all of the problems that exist. I only mentioned the HDMI in my initial posting because I have lost all hope for this paper weight that they sold me

I am so happy to hear that the ASUS computer has been repaired. After buying, its invoice or the screenshot of the invoice will be attached with the item. If you have other questions, you can contact the original seller for help.

Hi,

Just verifying that the audio does work on the TV's HDMI input when you try another source, e.g. DVD player or the like?

Also if you have Win 10 installed here is a link to the latest Asus Win 10 drivers, that may be of some help. Do the audio ones only at this stage. Fix one problem at a time, so as not to confuse the issue. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Yes, it does because my Bluray player and DirectTV devices are both connected to two of the other HDMI ports and I have switched them around to see if that was the case in the past. Also, I have downloaded each and every driver from ASUS for my make/model and I STILL have driver issues.

из

Hi @drod2070 ,

Did you uninstall the audio drivers or just update them?

Uninstall the drivers, restart the laptop and then let Windows find the 'new' hardware and install the drivers

OK, not trying to test your patience.

Have you tried connecting the laptop to another TV using HDMI?

If yes, did it work OK or have the same problem?

If no, try it. It is not unknown for there to be incompatibility issues between some devices when using HDMI. I know there shouldn't be but there are e.g. if one was HDMI HDCP compliant and the other wasn't for instance. This can affect either video or audio

Hi @drod2070

Just saw your comment below.

Go into Event viewer (press Win Key + x key together from desktop, option box will appear select Event Viewer link) wait for it to load and then look at the events (ensure Event Viewer (loca)l is selected in left hand pane). starting with Critical, then Error and then Warning. Start with the event numbers that have the most entries. Click on the + symbol to expand entries then double click on an individual event ID entry to open an info box below, then "google' the info to see what the problem is and the possible cure. Long process but once you knock out most of the causes of the most listed events your laptop will definitely run smoother.

@drod2070 , Dan, You may have tried this already. Go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound and then in the small window that is presented, there are two options: laptop speaker and TV, change TV to default.

Or right click the speaker in the bottom right corner click on playback settings then choose the device you want to send the sound to and make it the default sound. Good luck.

I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

I edited my original posting to add a screenshot of my driver issue in Device Manager and the lack of the TV option(I did try that one) and I'm showing disabled and diconnected devices as well...

@drod2070, Dan, I assume you have deleted and reloaded the drivers for that device and used the windows trouble shooter.

Sorry, I have to chuckle to myself regarding that. Here's the whole ball of wax. I bought this laptop March 2015 and it has had issues from the start and it has been back to ASUS repair 3 times so far with the first return being within one month of purchase. Each time they stick a bandaid on it and send it back telling me that 'all's fine' but when I get it back they address some of the issues but not the entire problem and yes, I go into great detail explaining what is and isn't going on with it. Basically what they do is reinstall Windows on it but the do nothing regarding the hardware. When I get it back, there will be a series of driver issues that are the same as before and by that time I am so spent on arguing with them and I try to make do with this paperweight that I'm stuck with. I have downloaded each and every driver for my make/model directly from the site and same incorrect drivers. I wish that they were local because then I could dump this thing in their laps and make them fix it

First, do what @jayeff said and go to that link to download drivers. This problem is more than likely a drivers issue. Do that, then go to Device Manager and check for updates on all system devices. If you have Nvidia graphics, go to GeForce.com and download the correct drivers. If you don't have a Nvidia GPU, just check for updates under display adapters in device manager. Trust me, download the correct drivers can do wonders for PCs and laptops.

Thanks but I'm running Windows 8.1 and anytime that I've reinstalled Windows to perform a system recovery(and each time that the unit has gone to ASUS repair), I check for certain errors that ALWAYS appear and sure enough, they'll be there. These include the same incorrect driver issues and I have downloaded each driver from the ASUS site for my make/model and they STILL appear. It takes some tweaking on my part and to be honest, I don't know if it's the correct tweaking but the error message disappears for that item. ASUS constantly tells me that 'all's well' with the unit but the same crud happens again and again. At this point, there are some error messages that are 'fixed'(maybe) but there are others that linger on such as the HDMI. I only mentioned the HDMI because I've all but given up on this paperweight that they sold me. Other issues include Disk running at 100% and there are times that CPU is at 100%. I've never dropped this unit or opened it to mess around...thanks

Have you tried installing a non-asus version of Windows? That may fix it. OEMs tend to tweak firmware.
