Computer shuts off when battery at 79%

I just got a used Macbook Pro 13" 2011 and the battery checks out as okay, but I'm having a problem with the computer shutting down, on battery, when battery hits 79%. I have retested it after the first time, and it again shut down at exactly 79%.

It runs down normally from 100%, then suddenly shuts down.

I can't reboot without using power cable. When I boot up with power cable, the battery shows 79% full.

Coconut Battery shows:

Full Charge Capacity = 5062 mAh

Design Capacity = 5770 mAh

87.7%

Manufacture date in 2013

Cycle Count = 4

Battery status = Good

Battery temperature = 27.3 degrees C

Strange stuff:

1) The CYCLE COUNT is a bit strange. Only 4. Though it did go from 3, when the computer arrived, to 4 after my first charge.

2) The computer arrived with Sierra installed, but I had some problems with the battery. When I ran the battery down and the computer shut off, when I rebooted the battery icon was SERVICE BATTERY, and the Full Charge Capacity was down to 2300.

3) The battery is really SLOW to charge. I'm recharging now and it's taken 1 hour to go from 79% to 85%. It shows 3:30 until fully charged, from 85%.

I have since installed El Capitan, and the battery reports are back to normal.

But I still have the shutdown problem.

No offence. But I was looking for a specific answer to the specific problem.

I might as well say I could just go into an Apple store and buy a whole new COMPUTER.

As to my battery problem, I hope to be able to find out - with the help of someone here on iFixit - if there's a cause for the problem: MagSafe port, battery cable to the logic board, some other hardware. To rule out that even a new battery would show the same problems.

The issue will be caused by the battery. It is either a faulty new battery the previous owner installed, but didn't check properly (usually a cheap manufacturer from eBay), or they bought an "original new" battery, which is actually used with a reset battery count, which is again faulty.

Regarding the intermittent service battery warning, this is pretty common to see. For example, it may not say this when rebooting sometimes, or on a certain version of Mac OS, it usually does this when the battery is right on the threshold of triggering this warning.

Slow charging will again be an issue with the battery being bad.

Buy a new one and replace it, nothing else will cause this issue, the warning is triggered by the internal battery PCB or battery temp sensors. I would recommend one from a good 3rd party brand (Runpower for example), that way you know it is definitely new, since a lot of original batteries have reset battery counts.

Hi. Thanks for the fast reply.

Is there any way to check if the battery is original or a knock off, using the information from, say, Coconut Battery?

The person I bought it from said he used it 95% of the time at home, as a workstation with external keyboard and mouse. That would explain the fact it had only 3 charge cycles, perhaps. If that's the case, is there a way to "recondition" the battery, or reset it in some way? The battery stats look pretty good, i.e. that it has 87% of the original capacity left.

Would there be any use in unplugging and removing the battery, to try to reset it?

Still testing. Charged battery to 100% and then started running off battery.

Estimated time remaining is 15 hours, so obviously out of whack.

But, from 100% down to 79% (when the computer shut down again), I got a good 3 hours out of the battery.

As regards the battery brand: Coconut Battery says it's made by SIMPLO, which I read online is an original supplier of batteries to Apple.

Hi, I’m facing the same issue with my MacBook Air 13 early 2015. Always when the battery charge goes down to 80% the mac shuts down immediately. My battery has only 104 cycles and it doesn’t take more than 30 minutes to the computer shuts off without power cable. I noticed the post is a little old, but did you replace the battery in your Mac?

Wish someone had an answer to this. Mine does the same. At 80%, without warning…my computer shuts off.
