Azaria Kelman see what a great question you've asked ;-)? It gave us many points to talk about and got a lot of great people engaged in meaningful discussions. Thank you very much for asking a very philosophical and intelligent question. I appreciate that and hope to see you around on our forum.

Seeing as how I am the least cool person to hang out with according to this list (just kidding @oldturkey03) I'll comment first.

For me it is about giving back. I lurked here a lot and learned a lot from really smart folks. I also benefitted from others who are active on other forums and Youtube. This is my way of giving back. I agree...knowledge is power!

I always cringe when I see comments from certain OP's who think we "do it for the points". As oldturkey says, there is certainly some dopamine effect going on here but that doesn't negate the volunteer spirit. @mayer has answered over 11000 questions, not counting comments and his admin duties. Think about that!

@refectio Somebody has to be the least cool person on the block. It's just your turn in the barrel. Your answers are certainly great, you just haven't been here that long yet, but have really built a reputation quickly. But we really don't know you personally that well yet. Don't even know your name yet. You're the guy that just does everything right and doesn't draw to much attention. I've never even had any cause to flame you ;-) We'll get to know each other as time goes by. Just tell someone to put it rice and see how much attention you get.

из

Funny! @mayer you did flame me once but I'm glad to see you've already forgotten!

The time I got the most attention was when I pointed out someone's hypocrisy, tongue in cheek, for calling an OP out for poor grammar...with a message full of bad grammar. I even included a winky but he downvoted 10 of my answers anyway.

@theimedic knows my name but he is sworn to secrecy ;>)

из

@refectio There's a limit now on the number of down votes a day. Because one guy gave me 40 in one day!

из

@mayer...yeah, that sucks. At least you are well endowed...points wise that is ;>).

IMO even 10 is too many, especially if it's all to one person. I mean really, who goes around downvoting someone multiple times a day? If someone puts out a bad answer, then others should comment and point out the issues with the answer.

из

@refectio I've been saying that for years. Downvotes should be reserved for blatantly wrong or malicious answers. I try to refrain from downvoting, if it looks like the person believes that it is a valid answer. Usually a comment or two clarifies that. Any answer with a question mark in it gets converted to a comment. Now, on the flipside, any answer that has "rice" in it will most certainly be strongly considered for a downvote ;-)

Azaria Kelman that is a really good question. For me it all comes down to this. Knowledge is power,so if I posses some knowledge about a certain topic, and I create a guide, or answer a specific question, I share this knowledge. This will enable that particular person to be empowered.To be empowered to accomplish a specific task, provides one with a sense of fulfilment, accomplishment and pride. In other words, it makes you feel good about yourself (bet that works on the dopamine receptors in our brains:-). Now, and this is an important step, if there is no feedback, this feeling will eventually dissipate and participation will decrease. Just like with anything else in this world, it pays to say thank you, or on here, to upvote and/or to accept an answer, shows appreciation. We all have to be in agreement, it is a great feeling to be appreciated. I am convinced it makes a difference, at least to one person. The one that asked the question and got an answer that worked. Or for the person that needed a guide to fix his/her device and found it on here, it sure makes a difference. This is the principle of "paying it forward" and I do try to live by that.

There are no monetary or other tangible incentives but you get to "hang out" with cool people like

@mayer

@jayeff

@jimfixer

@lpfaff1

@gigabit87898

@pccheese

@benjamen50

@theimedic

@refectio

and many many more....;-)

4 hours ago and already has 9 up votes! I think that's a record haha

из

I guess nobody liked my new team.

@oldturkey03, if this gets through, I think there may be something wrong with the auto anti spam thing again. A couple of my posts didn't come through.

из

@pccheese your team is fine and you have the right idea. Promote your team through guides and do something cool. Introduce yourself on the About page. Let people know who you are and what you are planing. Check the original Master techs https://www.ifixit.com/Team/271/Master+T... and see what "Markus " did. Try that for your team. More to follow on Greybeards. I think that we, the iFixit community and the teams, need to get involved in the fight for the right to self repair and numerous other things. The knowledge of this combined forum is tremendous and maybe we can all get together and solve a real problem. Something big.....think about the possibilities. @kyle and @kaykay sure must have some knowledge about some big projects that we can all tackle. Affordable water filtration maybe or how to capture water. How about providing access to something as simple as a book to impoverished communities and schools? We need to think globally and need to stop living in silos. Let's crank it up a notch. No, I am not a bleeding heart liberal but I guess I am a humanitarian.

Ive only been with the site for a little over the year as a regular contributor but have been using the site for years . I never remembering my user name from visit to visit when asking questions so always made new ones . I was introduced to ifixit because i needed to get into my sons iphone 4 back in 2011 this video was my introduction to ifixit .I actually ordered the kit mentioned in the video . I was a fan of MJ and enjoyed using the videos to educate me in apple repair. I have received so much from this site that a while back I decided to help out and have been at it ever since. I find it a nice way to unwind . It also keeps my mind sharp and helps to teach me new things . My knowledge of Macs is such that at work Im the go to guy but on this site I yield to more knowledgeable folk like @mayer and @danj I read their solutions and it enhances my knowledge of mac for work .I am also constantly amazed by the manuals that @oldturkey03 can come up with and if you need a manual hes defiantly the King of manuals. It truly is a global community as well @refectio @lpfaff1 and me are from Canada , @jayeff and @benjamen50 are from Australia, @zfix is from Bulgaria and he has a great teardown channel on youtube , @rany is from Lebanon . So you can get to meet with people from all over the world

As far as incentive the ifixit staff do throw swag our way from time to time as a thank you, which is nice, and @kaykay is the Queen of swag(Community and Outreach Manager ). So Azaria if you have the knowledge and skill to help hop in and lend a hand .Take criticism from the higher ups as them wanting to help you provide the best answer possible but most importantly have fun helping out. Hope to see you around the form

Jeremiah 17:10

I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Matthew 6:3

3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

4 That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.

Luke 6:38King James Version (KJV)

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

@mayer Amen. I am sure that this comes in many other forms as well. Lets try to see if anybody can come up with something like this in Hindu....

из

@oldturkey03 Those can be found in books like Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, and Lao Tzu: The Parallel Sayings https://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Buddha-Kris... and

Jesus and Buddha: The Parallel Sayings: https://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Buddha-Para...

I've read them but am most familiar with the Bible.

Nice trick there...I noticed that ;>).

из

@pccheese I think @refectio is referring to our notification links you know the "@". No, you are not the foreigner (remember @mayer and myself reside in Texas). Nobody is a foreigner on iFixit, everyone here is a citizen of the Fix-it-Universe.

из

@jimfixer @oldturkey03 , Swag, is that not what the Duke(John Wayne) had! :-)))

из

@pccheese, @oldturkey03 ...no I meant the reversed order. I went from least cool kid to the most cool kid according to @lpfaff1 :>). That means I'm out of the barrel @mayer!

I know, I know...there are meds for this affliction...

Not everything one' does is for their own personal use or satisfaction. We do this to save others money, time, and work, and to do some good. Many of us, including but not limited to, @refectio @oldturkey03 @mayer @theimedic @benjamen50 @gigabit87898 @jimfixer @jayeff @danj @avanteguarde, use our own personal time, as much as 5 hours a day, to answering questions and helping out on this community. Why do we do this? Well, why not give it a shot and find out! I do it because it helps burn time and I believe some people need guidance to save money and time. I wish I had some better words to put it in-well, just figure it out.

This may not be a good time to advertise it, but it's only once in a while I can spread a message to this many of ifixit's best. I created a new team to replace master techs because it has become overrun with inactive ifixit members. I would be honored if any of you would join my new team. It's called Master Techs (for the actual Master Techs). https://www.ifixit.com/Team/21339/Master...
