Dear Madam/Sir
I want to put in an SSD into my Macbook 13" 2006 intel A1181.
Can I put it into the old drive slot or do I have to put it into the place where the CD Drive/Super Drive was?

I would recommend replacing the HD with a SSHD hybrid drive as the better direction. You need this older series Seagate laptop SSHD drive. The newer FireCuda series does not support older SATA port systems.
While an SSD could be used, the OS (OS-X 10.7.x Lion) used on the older MacBooks does not offer TRIM support and you'll need an auto SATA port sensing drive like Samsung 750 EVO SSD
If you review the two spec sheets you'll see both offer support for SATA I (1.5 Gb/s). What ever drive you go with will need to support this SATA speed. You can't use either a fixed SATA II (3.0 gb/s) or SATA III (6.0 gb/s) drive as they are too fast for your system.
As for using an optical drive carrier to support a second drive be aware the PATA port this system has doesn't offer much speed (much slower that the SATA port) so it would not make sense to put a SSD drive in it and the other problem here is the optical drive port does not offer crash guard protection so if you put your HD in it a good bang while its running will ruin it. Double dammed!
Last point here is think through the costs and remember Apple no longer offers OS support and many apps today won't run on this older OS.

@pccheese - Take a second read of what was said.
It's all about the systems interface and what the drive was designed to work with. The older Seagate SSHd's are auto sense so they work across all three specs, the new Firecuda is a fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) so it can only off of a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) interface. Seagate dropped auto sense technology to be more price competitive and the market for older SATA I (1.5 Gb/s) & SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drives is fading off.
As they say 'Time Marches On' we faced the same issues when PATA was displaced by SATA. Today none of the drive makers make PATA drives. Yes, you can still find them collecting dust in some parts warehouses who would be glad to get rid of them. And that will be the case here for the older SSHD drives. I do wonder how long the old stock will last as I have a feeling it won't be long so our options will be limited moving forward.
I was there, remember? On April 19th, I asked @mayer what the results where, and this is what I got:
"I've installed about 20 of these now both in the 2.5" and 3.5" in 2009-2012 iMacs and MBPs. Both 1 & 2TB. Put a few 2.5" in the 21.5" iMacs, also. So far I have had no issues with them being backward compatible. Seems to a very good fast drive at a good price. On a couple of iMacs I have used hard drive adapter brackets to use the 2.5" drives on iMacs when I was out of stock of the 3.5" drives. We did have issues using SSHD drives in conjunction with Fusion set ups."

Thank you for all the help so far. So would it be safe to say that I should get the following: a Samsung 750 EVO SSD and an : acomdata Tango Pro TNGXXXUFBE-BLK 2.5" Black SATA USB & 1394 External Enclosure? My MacBook is 10 years old and I just want to keep it going.

You had said that I should rather get a hard drive not an SSD. To try to get back to where we were: Can't I just get an SSD to insert where the current hard drive is to replace it?
