Can you tell us which model you have 13" or 15"? So we can tell you which IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow as well as the needed part.

Sometimes the tools don't tell us the full story.

Think of it this way... You're on a call with your friend telling him to meet up with you and your friend is unable to make out what you said, he asks you to repeat when & where. But, he gets the time wrong. So you get angry with your friend when he's an hour late as thats what he thought is what you said. You clearly didn't blame the fault on the poor connection he had in hearing you.

Drive diagnostics are not much different! The fault from your view here is you have a pi$$ poor SSD! But do you?? I bet it's not the SSD thats at fault here.

A very common issue in the Unibody systems (both 13" & 15") is the drive cable breaks down. This is caused by a few different factors depending on the series.

  • In the 13" the cable rubs the upper cover underneath The machining of the body can leave some burs which scrape the insulation of the cable. In addition the sharp bends can over time snap the copper lines within the flex cable.
  • In the 15" you have the same issue with the rubbing and sharp bends but you also have the risk of the bottom cover bending pressing on the cable. There are two black plastics stand offs which often break from a bang make sure the one nearest the drive is in good shape. If not the cable is likely damaged.

So the answer here is you need to replace the drive cable. If you can I would visit an Apple Store or authorized Apple service center to have them replace the cable. Apple was quietly replacing the cable for free!

Update (05/07/2017)

I would still replace the cable as a bad cable can damage the drive.

Here's the IFIXIT guide to replace the cable: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive/IR Sensor Cable Replacement and here's the part you need: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable.

Well, I did unplugged it and make it as an external HDD via USB 3.0 enclosure...

Its still the same... backed up... reformatted reinstalled new OS still the same even I did a fresh re-installed of all the apps and files.

Anyway its still under warranty. Need to get a replacement SSD before I can return this to the seller/manufacturer.

Here's a bit more on troubleshooting from Crucial's web site : SSD Troubleshooting for a MacBook Pro

1) Did you make sure the firmware was the latest? You may need to burn to an optical disk.

2) Did you enable TRIM in OSX?

• open a terminal and type 'sudo trimforce enable'

Without TRIM, unnatural wear and tear of the SSD occurs, causing bad sectors.

Also, this product has a 3 year warranty. Backup your data, and open an RMA with them. They will send you a replacement free of charge.

@avanteguarde - TRIM services while important won't cause this type of problem if not enabled.

As for the warranty: Apple only offers a one year warranty as you can see here: Apple - Your Hardware Warranty. It's only if you buy AppleCare are you able to get an extension AppleCare for MacBook Pro systems. But, you need to have paid for the extended warranty before your limited warranty had expired.

Apple does offer extended warranty coverage when a defect has been found which either was a design or component failing. The HD SATA cable is being quietly being done, other issues have been more public.

из

@danj , I think this OP went to the Apple forum, and they also suggested TRIM.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/794...

And yes, it resolves some problems according to OP.

2012 macbooks still have warranty?

из

@avanteguarde - Different SSD's have different garbage collection systems.

In fact the opposite is true! Using TRIM on a SSD that does not support it can mess the drive up! Not using TRIM won't cause failure on any SSD. It's only using TRIM on a drive that can't handle it that causes damage.

As to Apple Warranty, This is a third party drive so it won't be covered. But the SATA cable would be as there is a replacement program. I would put the original Apple drive back in just to simplify things here as its clear this drive is having problems. I guess one could argue the fact the drive could have been damaged by the cabe (which we know can happen). But Apple would only put in what the system originally had.

We only use Samsung SSD's and they are very reliable (we use TRIM on them).

из

@danj, I never said Apple covered the SSD. Crucial covers it for 3 years, and may have an advanced shipment program where the replacement can be shipped first.

I have purchase 10 of these drives, and have never experienced a cable issue on 2009 - 2012 MacBook Pros. Again, how is 2012 still under warranty?

из

@avanteguarde - I never implied Apple would cover the SSD. All I ever said was Apple would replace the HD cable for free. Review what I said again:

"Apple does offer extended warranty coverage when a defect has been found which either was a design or component failing. The HD SATA cable is being quietly done, other issues have been more public."

Here's the listing of current public recalls: Exchange and Repair Extension Programs. The HD flex cable repair extension has not be publicly acknowledged.

If you do a search here in IFIXIT you'll find plenty of cases where the cable was bad and replaced both free from Apple or done on their own. In all of the cases the performance issues & dead drive syndrome were resolved. As a normal process we replace the cable and fortify it as we had lots of failures. I'm surprised you never had issues.

Hi, there are a few of this model showing up used.

I’d have tried doing a firmware update then IMMEDIATELY secure erase.

This seems to work in my experience, resurrected a dead 120 this way.

Useful tip: K Linux has a secure erase function.

Its generally believed that losing power is a sure fire way to get bad sectors,

seems that the revised firmware can mark them but not solve the problem so

the spare sector pool gets used up very quickly indeed.
