MacBook Pro 15" (Early 2011) won't power up

Since a few days my long-serving MBP 15" (Early 2011) won't power up.

  • It was running and it was put to sleep by closing the lid. After that (about an hour later) it didn't come back to life.
  • The MagSafe adapter lights green, not orange as it should when the battery is charging.
  • The battery indicator on the side of the device shows 6 (out of 8) green LEDs when MagSafe is connected. Otherwise it won't light up at all, which might hint at the battery.
  • After reading various posts about similar problems I decided to switch the DC board, to no avail.

According to other posts and my experience with other MacBooks (and other notebooks) it should be possible to start up without the battery. I tried this to rule out a battery problem.

Are there any other problems that I might check before thinking about switching the logic board? The latter seems like a pretty heavy investment on a 6 year old computer.

When you press the power on button do you get anything, sounds, lights? Were you getting a lot of beach balls before this started? Any drops or liquid damage?

No display activity, no sound, no lights, fans don't start up.

No beach balls before, the device worked like a charm.

The device was not dropped and there's no liquid damage.

SMC reset - yes. the computer should boot up while the battery is unplugged. Unplug battery and power adapter, hold down the power button for 60 secs, then plug in the power adapter only. Hit the power button again and see what happens.

Logic board failure is extremely common with 2011 15" MBPs - see last paragraph here: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro...

Have you noticed anything else weird with it? Any display issues like discoloration, lines across screen, or mosaic patterns?

No other symptoms before - unlike when the logic board was replaced the first time (about 2 years ago). It had the typical video issues before dying completely back then.

Already tried a normal SMC reset. I will try that "60 seconds power button with no power" trick.

No, didn't help. Thanks for the hint, though.

Dang. Have you played with the ram yet? you can remove one stick at a time to see if one is bad.

Do you have another power adapter to try just to make sure that isn't the issue?

из

Not yet, tried the RAM now. No change.

No other power adapter at hand. Are these symptoms known to be caused by faulty power adapters? I had quite a few broken adapters, but I think none of them had the green LED lit up.
