Reconnect broken wire to nichrome plate on toaster

Hey,

so unfortunately this morning my toaster Braun HT 550 gave up on me. The toaster lever just did not stay down anymore. So I disassembled the toaster and figured the issue was due to crumbs on the mechanical contact switch that closes as the lever gets pulled down.

I was so happy to see that the toaster worked again after removing those crumbs. Next I thought "well, now that I'm on it, let's just clean it a bit more thoroughly. During this, I unfortunately broke a contact from a copper wire to the rear side of one mica/nichrome plate.

At first I thought "well, let's just solder it, hopefully it won't get too hot". After testing I realised how wrong I was: the part get's hot and desolders itself pretty quickly. Also, it was indeed very hard to get a proper solder joint.

Previously, the contact was made using a cable lug and some sort of bolt through the mica-plate. The cable seems to be very brittle and mantled in some kind of ceramic?

Any ideas how to get the wire contact back on that plate? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi,

I think the parts used are a crimp terminal, I think they are called ring tags, and a rivet. You can drill on the head to get the rivet out and then buy a crimp terminal, attach the cable and then finally rivet it back. If you do not have the tools, either approach a workshop nearby or buy the tools.

this sounds like a good idea! Since I am new to riveting - how do you select for the proper rivet size? Any advice?

Hello,

My Toaster Braun 4119 is not working anymore. The adjusting slide does not engage at the bottom and the heating does not switch on anymore. Unfortunately I do not know how to open the toaster. The Braun HT550 Toaster looks very similar.

Can you tell me how to open it? Text and photos would be very helpful.

Hartmut, I'm sorry. It is quite some time when I disassembled mine and I did not document it properly. I might have found instructions somewhere on the web. And I remember needing quite some force here and there...

You could always try soldering the cable on to the rivit. If that doesn't work, do what john said above.

so soldering was my first attempt. However, when switching the toaster on, I got fumes from that solder area and the wire disattached itself. This is why I assumed that this part might get really hot and is probably a better idea to just crimp a ring onto the cable?

Yes. Go with what John said.
