I have a teac tape recorder a-2050, when power is on , the vu meters lite up and if I activate one of the two micro-switches the motor runs,but if the long bar switch to allow the tape to play, the motor will not run, in the back I can see the relay pull in and thats the only indication that some thing is alive. I have worked on tv and radios with schematics but have nothing for this.

Use a multimeter to test the switch. If you plan on keeping the machine consider buying the repair manual for it. I found this one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/TEAC-A-2010-A-2050-A...

These run on 4 idler wheels under the front panel that drives the capstan motor. They are probably gummy and deteriorated.
