Boot loop after testing screens

Hi,

New to posting on ifixit, but long time user of the site. I've noticed many people are getting boot loop issues at the moment and posting questions but none seem to relate to my issue.

I had a few old iPhone 6 screens laying around and decided to test them this evening to see if some could be recycled/upcycled. I tested around 8 screens and all was well, until suddenly I connected one which caused the phone to start boot looping, assuming it was just an issue with this specific screen I put the original screen on that I was using with the phone and expected everything to be back to normal...

No joy, I have tried two different batteries and also different screens, with and without the front camera flex connected as I understand this can sometimes cause problems, but its still boot looping.

The phone was running ios10 perfectly fine beforehand and in full working order. I have tried 3utools software however the phone does not even get recognised by my laptop when connected (official apple cable). The method I was using for testing was to connect a new screen, turn iphone on, test screen, if it was okay, turn iphone off via power button, if the screen was too broken (digitizer/lcd) I'd disconnect the battery to turn off the phone, the phone was always powered off when connecting the new screen.

Please advise as this issue is causing me great confusion, I dont understand how disconnecting and reconnecting a few screens could cause this.

Thanks

Josh

Have you tried to restore the device? It might not be what you want to hear, but it might be your best next step.

I would love to try a restore however the device is not recognised when plugged into my laptop

I've had a bad charging port brick a Samsung Galaxy SII before so restore might be a good idea.

@benjamen50 cheers for the help, however due to the constant boot loop, I cannot connect the device to my laptop to restore, it isn't recognised when connected via usb...

@layall_5 Did you try to disconnect every cable from the motherboard except the power buton and try to boot like that? Check the connectors for bent pins with a magnifying glass if you have one on hand

I'm a little late to the party...

You may have tried some of these suggestions but they're here for posterity. Please try them and get back to me by commenting on my answer. A bootlooping device can be caused by many things.

Try these things (if you haven't already) to see if anything helps:

  • Can you plug it into a USB ammeter to see if there is any current flow?
  • Because this happened after a screen change, inspect, preferably under magnification, the area surrounding the connectors for any loose, dislodged or visibly damaged components
  • Also inspect the connectors for damaged pins or debris
  • Try a hard reset (Home & Power button for 10 secs)
  • Use a genuine Apple Lightning connector
  • Use a genuine Apple charging brick and let it charge overnight
  • Try to connect it to different computers (mac/pc if possible) with an updated iTunes
  • Put the phone in recovery mode (search DFU Mode). Careful, this can reset your data
  • Use 3uTools for putting it in and out of Recovery Mode
  • Use 3uTools to flash the firmware (you can't downgrade)
  • Check the condition of all the flexes (with magnification)
  • Disconnect the Front Camera Ribbon from the logic board and reboot your phone
  • Disconnect the screen assembly completely and see if iTunes will recognize the phone.

Otherwise, you may have a logic board issue. If you are uncomfortable doing these steps, consider finding a repair shop to do the troubleshooting. A shop that also does micro-soldering can go deeper if the problem is not modular in nature.

When you disconnect and recconnect a screen it is very important to disconnect the battery when doing so if you didnt disconnect the battery you may have corrupted the os by causing a short Attempt to Restore on Itunes and it should go back to normal from my experience.

@cprroseville yes I ensured I disconnected the battery each time a new screen was tested, so I'm not sure why it happened. I have tried to restore via iTunes but the phone doesn't stay turned on for long enough to be recognised by itunes.

Did you manage to fix this issue? How did you do it what was the problem?
