Dryer stops working randomly

We have a kenmore dryer that seems to randomly stop working. It will work for maybe one cycle and then stop, it has an electric control panel and it appears to be totally dead, no response to any button press. it does have power though, as the drum light comes on.

If I disconnect power, then disconnect all cables from the control board and reassemble, it starts working again. I replaced the control board, but it still has the same problem.

Any idea on what may be causing it?

My first thought is that you have lost one leg of your electrical supply. These things run off of 220 volts which in the USA consists of two hot 110 lines coming in. I would start by testing the wall outlet and see if both legs are hot with a multimeter. You should have two 110 lines and a ground.

I tested the outlet and also where the wires connect to the block on the dryer and got 2 lines of 110v each, so it seems to be supplying the correct voltage from the wall.

First please give us your exact model number. When it was working, did it take twice as long to dry as normal?

My next thought is that one of the two thermal fuses has blown:

Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a safety device designed to protect the dryer from overheating. The fuse is located on the blower housing or at the dryer’s heat source such as the heating element on electric dryers or at the burner on gas models. The fuse should be closed for continuity meaning it has a continuous electrical path through it when good. If overheated the fuse will have no continuity meaning the electrical path is broken and the fuse has blown. A multimeter can be used to test it for continuity. Be aware that a blown thermal fuse is an indication of a restricted exhaust vent from the dryer to the outside. Always check the dryer venting when replacing a blown thermal fuse.

Next is the door switch which may be having intermittent failure.
