Custom made DIY housing

So I have a iPhone 6 Plus and I know about the custom coloured housings for them, but I'm wondering if anyone has made a custom one them self, not like custom painted or wrapped, custom made with like a glass back or something like that, would love to know if anyone has made one or has looked into it. Thanks

Good question

I would just like for it to be different, and I have always liked the back glass like on Samsungs, and I would like to add a wireless charger into it but have it built in

Non-metal cases are likely to have functional issues since the case bezel doubles as the antennas.

Hmm makes sense, so it would have like a metal bumper type thing in between the front screen and back? With the antennas some how merged in?

The antenna needs to be in the correct shape, with the main part of the casing itself acting as ground plane reference. Changing either of them may cause performance change.

I would try having a look at "strange parts' youtube channel. he made a glass backed iphone (6 or 7) with wireless charging. May be worth it. just trying to help with ideas

(EDIT link here for his page on this matter...)

Sounds like you want the upcoming iPhone 8 ;-} The new iPhone expected this fall will have a glass body like the iPhone 3 & 4 had.

Glass is a very hard material to machine when you are doing small scale manufacturing. Apple uses a mold to cast the glass and then machines which you just can't do on your own.

Finding a C&C machine with the needed cutting tolerances and creating (finding) the needed control file will also take some work. You'll also need to make the molds to cast the antenna insulators and then a frame to glue the parts together. Getting the correct strength of metal as well as the plastics also need to be a special kind so the antennas work properly.

Lastly, legally you can't put the Apple logo on the body.

Most of he custom colored bodies you do find are not very good. The quality of the metal, the insulators as well as the machining is just not as good as Apple's so you risk not having a working phone once you put things together.

I would focus on coverings and cases as the better way to make your phone unique!

Update (07/11/2017)

The iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus use the upper & lower part of the frame as the antennas you can see them here the gold parts that are isolated by the white plastic on the top & bottom. Review the IFIXIT teardown here to see more Детальный разбор iPhone 6 Plus:

And here looking from the inside you can see the white plastic glued to the the metal pieces with the black injection plastic:

What many people fail to understand is there are in fact four antennas in the body shell! Two cellular, WiFi & Bluetooth, then there is the fifth hidden inside! For NFC services.

Yeah true, would some sort of plastic on the back work instead of glass?

The problem with plastic is its strength. Apple suffered though 'Bend-gate' with the iPhone 6 Plus as the metal Apple had chosen was not stiff enough. The iPhone 7 & 7 Plus use a stronger aluminum. Plastics just can't be as stiff without being bulkier (for the frame).

You would still need to have the needed antenna's and they need to be effective. Which brings me to the iPhone 4 design which used a band around the edge. But unlike the iPhone 3 design it used the sides so when people held the phone they interfered with the antennas ability to receive and transmit 'Antenna-gate'. Apple had to come out with a rubber band to cover the antenna bands so people wouldn't short them out with their sweaty hands!

As you can see even Apple gets stung with the simplest problem creating a mess. Now you are in the same boat here designing and building a custom case.

If I were to work something out, would I need to somehow need to remove the antenna bands and install them into the housing? Or could I get some sort of signal/antenna boosted?

из

This is a very complex design. I doubt you could alter it as the connection points are fixed. See my update above)

By the time you get the needed engineering people to help you it would cost quite a lot of money and you still wouldn't get close to what Apple has designed. You likely would have poor service over one or more of the antennas.

A fanciful idea just not practical, look at a beautiful Swiss watch movement. How many people have tried to emulate what the Swiss took years in perfecting! Even today these watches cost in the $50,000 on up! Patek Philippe 3878J Skeleton Watch
