My mic-jack soesn't work.

I use headsets when calling on skype, but the mic no longer works. I have switched headsets three times with headsets that I know work, and it still doesn't work. Finally, plugging in a battery powered wireless, it works. I have checked the sound selection under system preferences and checked the input-jack, but it still only works with a powered mic. Something broken?
