iPad Air - not charging or turning on.

I have an iPad Air that isn't charging or turning on. It does not show up on the computer as a device.

Using a pass-through multimeter I can see it is drawing 5V @ ~0.2A which is obviously not right.

What could be the problem?

Thanks for your time

Hey Beninja,

Sounds like there is a problem with the tristar chip on the board, happens from time to time, especially if you charge with a non official cable in a car charger. (Starting the engine gives a voltage spike that the cable should safeguard your device from).

Go to a microsoldering repairshop where they replace these chips, it's kind of a straight forward job for them.

Once the battery is charged enough, the device will boot too.

If it's something else, these shops will figure it out too.

(We do this as well but we're from Belgium, i'm sure there is a shop closer by).

Kind regards,

Tom

Hey!

It's something you will be able to fix yourself in the future, if you really want to learn about this follow these people on youtube (all/some are here on the boards as well).

iPad Rehab (iPhone & iPad)

STS Telecom (iPhone & iPad)

Louis Rossmann (Macbooks)

Andrew Paul (PS4)

Microsoldering (iPhone & iPad)

They really explain stuff, also how they look at a problem, and give you the tools to do these things (tools being the equipment & the way of thinking).

Warning! Try only with the right equipment and on a testboard until you get the hang of it ;)

Kind regards,

Tom

I am happy to say I am subscribed to 4 out of 5 of those guys already, you make me feel like I'm on the right track :) Equipment is definitely a barrier to learning but I'm getting there slowly but surely - Thank you so much for the tips and encouraging words!

Take it to a shop that can do micro-soldering. Here's one that can do the job. They're in CA. It took them less than a day to figure out, called me, and sent it back. Works like a charm. They are called RxTech Repair.
