Why can't I restart?

Following the guide, I was attempting to upgrade my display to the high definition LCD panel.

When I try to restart with the original display connected (in order to put the machine into Sleep mode) I get the message:

"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."

I tried booting from the OS X install CD but got the same result. And now I can't eject it. I also tried installing a brand new hard disk drive, same message.

I then tried running the built-in hardware diagnostic test; it fails with:

"4MOT/1/40000002: Left_Upper_Front"

I have no idea what that means. Would anyone know what it refers to, specifically? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, The references I find indicate a logic board/fan problem. I am including a link to one of those discussions to give you a better idea. Good luck in resolving your problem. Read to the bottom--it mentions a update that may clear the problem.

Thanks, that thread was enlightening. I didn't think to Google.

I first tried resetting the SMC on the logic board - no change.

Upon raising the upper case, I noticed the left fan wasn't spinning at all, whereas the right fan was.

I removed both fans, plugging each into its opposite connector on the logic board.

Now the right fan doesn't spin but the left one does; and the hardware test reports:

"4MOT/1/40000002: Left_Middle-Front"

This would seem to eliminate the logic board so I'll go ahead and order a replacement left fan.

Consider doing both fans. Several times, after replacing just one fan, I've had to go back in and replace the other in a month or two. Consider removing he logic board and cleaning out the vents by the heat sink and reapplying thermal paste.
