Is it possible to replace battery without removing everything?

This guide says that I need to remove almost everything from the inside of my laptop and only then proceed to remove the battery. But why? I feel like unless your hand coordination is bad, there should be no possibility for the adhesive solvent to get out of battery compartment and damage something. Are there any other risks or can I cut down the process from 70+ steps down to ~15-20?

If you’ve done a few you can leave the logic board in, it can be done!

But if this is your first time ... I would strongly recommend taking the logic board out first!

The rub here is you will need to do some heavy pressure to unglue the battery and in the process you could hurt your logic board.

It’s better safe than sorry!

But isn't it more likely that I will hurt the laptop while disassembling it? I mean, there are so many different cables and ribbons and flimsy connectors... On my previous laptop I managed to tear a cable in half; thankfully, it was a bluetooth connection which I never used anyway. But I'm afraid I'm gonna screw up again and I would love to do as little as possible and have as little an opportunity to screw up as I possibly can...

I think the risk is higher with the logic board in than out.

The problem is getting under the battery you'll end up pressing on the logic board and cables. With the board out there is room for the cables to be pushed down out of harms way.

I think you don't understand the amount of pressure you need to apply even with the solvent to get the cells loose as they are firmly glued down.

@Akiino, which way did you end up going? I am leaning towards just taking out the trackpad connector going across the battery and not disassembling the rest.

How did you guys make out with this. I removed everything per the guide on my 2012 15” and once I was done I sort of thought, “why did I need to remove ALL of this????” and I’m about to do this on my 2015 15” Retina. thinking I’d be just as happy to take a long time and just work carefully to remove the battery itself. I can be patient. What’s the minimal amount I need to remove? it looks like the speakers would be the primary thing and the trackpad connector.

True! You don't need to remove everything, but if you don't you run the risk of damaging things as you fight getting the battery out >> Thanks Apple! <<

This is basic poor Apple design which forces excessive work for the major repair areas: Batteries, keyboards, and displays all of which are more prone of needed replacement.

So are you a gambler or what to be safe?

из

Thanks Dan, yes I also ended up posting on the main fixit page comments. Completed this last night. Didn't wait for my 99%isopropyl and just went with nail polish remover and old cards I had. I actually think the battery in there was already an Apple replacement (I checked for the recall service offer for this and said it wasn't valid -I'm the second owner)

Anyway, Did it all with qtip application of dabs of acetone, edge of card dipped in acetone and some excessive upwards prying (ouch!!!) edge ones came up quite easily - two main center ones a bit more difficult.

My biggest challenge ended up turning back on and the Trackpad worked, but keyboard didn't. I thought I might not have flipped the ZIF toggle back down and indeed had not - hoped that would fix it but alas not so.

So tested USB and connected Bluetooth keyboards and prepared myself for possible damage and maybe considered ordering a replacement cable.

Then attempted full reset of cable - removed and replaced and then everything worked.

@rocketmanblamb - So which way did you go? Also don't forget to score the answer if you think is was wise to pull the logic board given how much pressure you applied.

из

Yup I scored it -- every little bit right!

So, I didn't damage anything that I can tell yet. I wish I had been just a little bit more patient but it does take a bit of pressure to pull it up. Was thinking the string method might be even better! (thread underneath and saw back and forth)

I'd do it again without pulling up the logic board - hate the pain of that process although the directions are sufficient to do this - as you say if you have some experience with basic repairs.

My one BIG mistake was I didn't align the battery properly --- I actually had to pull up my replacement battery 5 minutes after pushing it down - holy moly!

but all worked out.

I've done one, am about to do a second, and plan to leave the logic board in this time. I've taken apart a lot of Mac laptops over the years, and disconnecting so many tiny, fragile connectors seems unnecessarily risky. If Apple's official repair process does that, it's because they know they can grab a new logic board or other parts if they mess things up. But most people don't have that luxury. So if you can avoid disconnecting all of the fragile interconnects, I think it makes sense to avoid doing so.

That said:

1. If you spill acetone on the logic board, it's all over. Maybe put it in from the other end?

2. You must remove the trackpad to keep acetone out of it. Maybe the speakers, too.

3. Throw away the plastic card and use dental floss (sawing motion) to separate the battery from the case. You can't get a card to be flat against the top case, so you're likely to deform the battery as you remove it, which poses a fire risk. Floss shouldn't have that problem.

@dgatwood52656 - You have a few errors!

1 - Acetone won’t hurt the logic board (small spill) I wouldn’t bathe it!

2 - If you review Step 74 in the guide you’ll see we don’t take the trackpad out as you need take the battery out first!

3 - Both methods work! Before doing either method you need to run the battery down (often the battery is already dead) There is no fire risk as we aren’t pouring a gallon or two into the system! I’ve done 100’s and never had issues. You need a bit of patience as you need to run around the batteries edges with a small amount to let it seep under to soften the grip.

You won’t hurt the trackpad or speakers if you follow the guide.

из

Yeah, I hadn't actually done this one when I posted that, and was basing it on my experience with the Touch Bar version, which has holes in the top case where acetone would go through into the trackpad if you don't pull it. That varies from model to model, I guess.

AFAIK, acetone dissolves epoxy, which is used for a lot of components (chips, etc.). It might not destroy anything, but I wouldn't risk it.

On the model whose battery I swapped out today, I couldn't pull the speakers without removing the logic board (redacted swearing at Apple's engineers), so I used dental floss (multiple pieces) without acetone to remove the outer packs, then used the plastic cards to remove the other segments. By putting acetone on top of the cards, I could direct it under the edges of the individual packs (after the first two) and keep it away from the speakers.

The fire risk comment was about the risk of pack puncturing/crushing, not the acetone.

из

@dgatwood52656 - IC chips, Capacitors & Resistors all use a ceramic or heat resistant polycarbonate not epoxy. Very few components use epoxy as it’s heat sensitive.

Sure! Prying the battery with a sharp object you do run the risk of puncturing the battery, running with a knife is likewise dangerous! I don’t use anything that could puncture the battery and I don’t force things either. The only risk is when you have a charged battery or one that blistered up which could split open in the process of talking it out, which is why I discharge the battery and go outside when I have to deal with a blistered battery.
