Replace Digitizer or LCD on an LG Touch?

I spilled some cofee w/cream on my LG VN 270 and now I cant see anythign on the screen.

I tried drying the phone out with rice, then with a dessicant packet in a plastic bag, and maybe they helped, cause the phone seems to work, except the visuals.

So I am trying to figure out whether it is the LCD or Digitizer layers that need replacing - can anyone help with this?

Thanks!

thanks CDE, can you describe how hard it was to get the phone apart? Step-by-step instructions or any tricks required? I too have never cracked a phone apart.

I believe that the only way to really determine that is by disassembly. Your digitizer may be obscuring your LCD if it is grossly soiled. But I do have the gut feeling that you are probably looking for a new LCD. Again disassemble it first and check the damage. Good Luck and let us know.

Not sure I can be much help, but I am in need of an lcd screen for the above mentioned phone. Have you found any place that carries the part? I would agree that it is most likely your lcd screen and not the digitizer. If you are willing, I have found a place that sells the lcd screen for a reasonable price, but requires a minimum purchase of (2). I was thinking if I had no other choice, I could buy both and throw the other one up an ebay, especially if I already knew I had a buyer! Worth a shot...

I have searched and found this place...

Also was educating myself a bit on the phone. Learned that the touch screen is resistive vs. capacitive ie...it is pressure sensitive and consists of layers (vs. ipod touch which only requires a light 'swipe' of the finger to activate a button.) Maybe you already knew that, but thought it may come into the equation at some point.

I called a local repair shop and their estimate was $100 - $125. Compared to the $70 for the above link, way too much.

Still not sure what I'm going to do. These repair shops will try and 'scare' you away from a DIY repair claiming that the flex cable is sensitive and one wrong move and you have an expensive paper weight. Blah blah blah. I suppose their threats have some merit, but really for me, it's about cost effectiveness.

I still can't find the part anywhere as it is a fairy new phone model.

Good luck!

UPDATE !!!! SUCCESSFUL REPAIR....by some miracle, i found the lcd display screen on ebay. truly a miracle. including shipping the purchase cost was less than $22. as for the repair, i had to go back in after i had put everything back together (a second time) and reconnect an lcd display cable connection. after what we thought was a successful installation and repair of the new replacement lcd, we realized the frustration of not getting the results we anticipated and expected. so, i went back in and checked the connectors on the old display screen and realized that the new lcd was not properly connected. anyway, if you need any assistance with a repair on this phone model, i would be happy to offer any help i could. WOO HOO !!!!!! DIY doesn't get any better than this...CDE

Since, I've had to replace the lcd display screen yet another time -- believe it or not. The second replacement occured quite a few months ago, maybe longer, but still a success. I found the second 1lcd display screen and the digitizer on a package deal on ebay for a fair price. I did not attempt the digitizer replacemenet, even though i wanted to b/c it seemed a bit more complicated, or maybe i just didn't take enough time to evaluate the process. Anyway, the phone has since had problems with the qwerty keypad not working. I suspect all of those times that i opened up the phone took its toll on the flex cable. The lcd display on the phone still works on both sides, but when you slide it to open the keyboard to text it does not work (i know that doesn't make sense) but i'm sure it's just a loose connection and not the actual lcd display that is causing problems. I've reopened the phione and been back in at least twice disconnecting and reconnection/seating the few data cables, but to no avail. The phone is now being replaced with a samsung rogue as using the touch screen is very inconvenient for texting. it is not my phone, but my daughter's. But as for opening up the phone...no tricks really, just have some pretty decent small jewelry screwdrivers available, both flat head and phillips, but mainly use the phillips. And be very careful not to strip the screw heads -- they are tiny!. With enough force and pressure you can turn the screws out fairly easily, but make sure you have a tight fit with the right screwdriver. Of course i stripped a head and evenutally had to bring out the drill and use a very tiny bit to spin the screw out. It worked though, but it wouldn't have been necessary if i had been a bit more patient. Also i had a helper, but in some cases this may or may not be wise. It actually helped me, but some people do better work solo. Another useful 'too' is a pretty strong magnet that can assist with keeping from losing the screws, just be careful not to get it too close to the phone i suppose. The big flex data cable pops out from the metal plate which is connected to the motherboard, and the other smaller cables connected to the lcd screen are fairly easy to pop out. One word of caution, if you are replacing the lcd display, you will have to remove the doubled sided tape. Try and peel it off very careful so as not to get it stuck to itsefl. If it does, no big deal, but less hassle if it doesn't. I still have the spare digitizer, brand new, and i'm not sure what is going to happen to the phone once the samsung arrives. I would be willing to put it up on ebay for almost a giveway if it could help someone else out. CDE
