Planning to replace hard drive with SSD

Current hard drive extremely slow, and friend has suggested to upgrade by replacing hard drive with SSD. However specifications for this model say that the connector is only for 3Gb/ SATA 2.0 connector for 3.5" hard drive. If I buy a 2.5" tp 3.5" convertor will this work?

Do make sure the SSD you go with is supported at the slower SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface speed. Some SSD's only run at SATA III (6.0 Gb/s).

SSD are great! But consider the costs per MB and the remaining life of your system. Apple's newer OS's won't run on your system (macOS Sierra 10.12.x or subsequent versions), the highest it can run is El Capitan 10.11.x.

If you are planning on going with a small SSD then it makes more sense than getting the more expensive larger units given the age of your system. You might want to take a 1/2 step here going with a hybrid SSHD drive like Seagate's FireCuda It offers the speed of a SSD (cache) you're looking for here and yet has the depth of a traditional HD.

If you go with a SSD, yes you can get an adapter frame to support the smaller 2.5" SSD drive in the 3.5" HD bay. You'll need to transplant the thermal sensor over from the HD to the SSD.

As an alternative how about swapping out your optical drive for the SSD? That way you gain the benefits of getting the SSD as your boot drive for the speed and then leverage your current HD for the deeper storage. This way you also don't need to get a very large SSD (128 GB will do)

Here's the different IFIXIT guides:

Here's one frame you could use: OWC 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Adapter Bracket

I'm very inexperienced in this but anxious to fix current computer if possible rather than dump in landfill. Thanks for your advice. WIll study options carefully

@peterbull - Both tasks or quite easy following the guides. Take your time and don't force things! You can do it! Enjoy the new life of your system which ever direction you go.

I hope that you will see this Dan, if I write here...Having thought things through, I think I shall go with the option of replacing optical drive with SSD, taking your suggestion of 128GB. I think I saw a guide on ifixit for replacing the optical drive with an SSD? I had thought of replacing the optical drive anyway, as it ceased to function a while back, but I see the replacement drives cost £80 as against Apple's own external drive for £35!. I did try an external drive before, but was met with a message telling me that I couldn't add an external drive when there was an internal drive [good old Apple!] I guess there's a way to get round this?

Good call Peter! Click on the icon on the right in my answer thats the IFIXIT guide you'll need to follow and you'll need to get the special carrier either from IFIXIT or other source. The last issue is the SSD you get will need to support SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). Make sure the drives spec sheet states it as an example here's Samsungs: Samsung 850 EVO. Note the 'Interface' line lists the SATA II speed 3.0 Gb/s.

OK Dan, we're on a pretty steep learning curve here and I'd just like to check a few things with you.

I've looked at the that guide now, I was was discouraged from looking at it earlier as I thought that Dual Drive was referring to the hybrid drive you mentioned in your earlier post. I'm now happy with this. I've located the optical Drive Enclosure on ifixit. Please confirm correct part no. EU107081 on the europe shop (I'm in UK), or IF107-081-1 in US shop (at half the EU price!!)

I've looked at the SamsungSSD 850 EVO 2.5". The 250Mb version sells here in UK at £79.98 It actually says that it is SATA III at 6.0Gb/s but is compatible with SATAII at 3.0Gb/s. I don't know what other SSD options there are but it seems a good product and I'm happy to go with this. If you confirm that these are both compatible with my iMac, I shall go ahead and order them (along with the special tools required to dismantle the box).

A thought has occurred to me; After the the SSD has been installed, will the iMac 'know' to boot from this SSD or I suspect I will I need to give it some special instructions? Thanks again for your help!
