Cannot turn on Airport after installing new Airport Extreme card?

I purchased an Airport Extreme card from Ifixit quite some time ago and finally got around to installing it. It shows up on System Profile, showing that it is off. All attempts to turn it on fail. I have reopened the computer to recheck and all appears correct. The connectors on the new card are located in slightly different positions, causing one wire to be stretched tight. I had to tape it down to keep it in place, but it remains firmly connected. I tried installing AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler, but it won't install on a Core Duo machine. This is a 1.83 GHz model.

Is there any way to get this to work? I couldn't find a firmware update. Why would this card even be produced if it can't be turned on?

The wire being stretched tight leads me to believe that you have the wrong card installed or installed incorrectly. Please give the last the letters of your serial number and the airport card number.

The serial number of the computer is W86270ZTVWZ. The AirPort card is Model No. BCM94321NC. The iFixit packaging is labeled HH102607 Z607-0046-A ASSY, Airport Card.

After installing the original 802.11a/b/g card, I still have the same problem, can't turn on AirPort. I tried resetting PRAM and that doesn't work, either. The computer just starts normally, no 3 chimes.

I just found the invoice. The ifixit part number for the card is IF185-038-1.

Check the number on the card and see if it isn't BCM94321MC, note the MC.

In Leopard, to turn the Airport card on enter the following in Terminal:

/usr/sbin/networksetup -setairportpower on

If this fails please tell me what OS your are running.

You are correct, it's M. I should have used the magnifying glass the first time (74 year old vision). The actual Model number is BCM94321MC. There is only one way to route the wires and be able to reassemble properly. I am running Snow Leopard, ver. 10.6.6. Is the Terminal entry the same as in Leopard?

Snow Leopard changes

In Snow Leopard the command remains, however now you need to run it as sudo. You also need to include the actual network device name AirPort is running on. You can get that by running the following command:

/usr/sbin/networksetup -listallhardwareports

You’ll see Airport listed and below it the device. If the machine does not have two Ethernet ports AirPort is commonly listed as “en1″

After you have that you include it in your command:

sudo /usr/sbin/networksetup -setairportpower en1 on
