Bad logic board - Can I get the hard drive out?

I replaced the LCD screen in my MacBook Pro after I dropped it. The computer worked for about 3 weeks and then it completely died. Someone said it was a bad logic board. Now I cannot return the screen (it's been over a month), but I was wondering if I can get the hard drive out and use it as an external hard drive with a different computer. Would it work even if the logic board doesn't?

I've taken my mac to 3 different places, and tried to fix it myself. Nothing has worked... I have a brand new LCD and a broken computer. Spent a lot of time and money trying to fix it and it still doesn't work. I'm depressed. Any advice?

Are you taking this to Mac people or PC people? Sounds like a lot of incompetence

mangel, why not elaborate on your issues and see if any of the great guru's on here might not outsmart the tech support. Wouldn't be the first time...

Thank you for your responses.

I'll attempt explaining the situation better.

My MacBook Pro is the A1226 Santa Rosa Model, 15".

After I dropped it, I took it to a local technician (he works on macs). He gave it back to me 3 weeks later without repairing it. He told me the problem was the LCD - when plugged to an external monitor the computer worked, so I went ahead ordered the part and replaced it myself.

My mac worked fine for about 3 weeks, but now the screen is completely dark. I tried connecting it to an external monitor -this time nothing happened. I took it to iRestore in Nashville, and they had it for about 2 weeks. They said that the problem was a bad logic board (nothing else, they were not very specific). I had to pay $60 for the diagnostic.

I'm tired of buying parts and paying for diagnostics, and maybe is best to get the hard drive out and save for a new computer. I just wish someone could fix it!

I so seldom see bad logic boards, it's usually something else. "Bad Logic Board" seems to be a catch all for poor diagnostics. I'd at least try throwing it up in the Answers section. Give the EXACT model and all the symptoms and history you can. There's a lot of very fine techs that contribute over there and the price is right.

By EXACT model, I mean exact. Please give the last three letters of your serial number. Your series had a Nvidia video processor that was bad and Apple will replace the logic board for free if that's the problem. Told you we were good ;-)

When you try to start, what sounds do you get and what lights. If you have another Mac, hook it up via firewire cable and try starting holding down the "T" key. See if your hard drive icon shows up on the other machine.

Wow, I didn't know you could be so detailed! Thank you so much for caring!

The last five digits of my serial number are HHX91. When I push the on button I get the little front light and the sound of the hard drive trying to start, but then nothing else happens. I tried hooking it up to another Mac via firewire, but the icon didn't showed up. What's next?

Your machine does have the Nvidia GPU. Now we just have to see if we can get something on the screen. Start up from your system installation disk by holding down the "C" key and see if you get anything. Remove that battery and try again. Unplug it with the battery out and AC off and hold down the start button for 10 seconds. Then restart with no battery. Let us know of any sounds or lights. Of course if you can get it to boot and see scrambled color pixels on the screen, we get a free logic board.

Your machine has the famous nVidia 8600M GT graphics card. The majority of these failed because of that graphics card. The problem with fixing them is the GPU in question is no longer produced, Apple no longer services this machine and the recall is over and has been for many years already. These days, these machines can't be fixed without sketchy reliability and has not been worth it for years.

The best thing you can do is get a 2010 Unibody to replace it, if you want to keep the upgradeabiliy and repairability of the machines. If you don't exactly care, get a Retina MacBook Pro. The 2008 non Unibody still fails, but at a much lower rate. The Unibody 2008 doesn't, but the machine is a bit long in the tooth these days with a Core 2 Duo.

Before giving up on that machine i'd disassemble it completely, reseat all connectors, of course and if theres any dust or grime on the LB clean it off with 99.9% alcohol. Mayer is right - far too many machines are put to rest with the "bad logicboard" excuse. We salvaged a lot of machines with these straightforeward measures.
