Arm will move into position but then not drop onto record.
Tone arm lifts from cradle. Moves ver into position on LP but does not drop onto LP. It stays in that position until moved back onto cradle.

I presume there is a lever to manually lift the tone arm. Check that this is fully in the down position. It will need to go down further than just to rest the tone arm onto the cradle. If that's not the problem then maybe there's something wrong with the mechanism behind the tone arm lift lever.
