Do I need a new battery or charging cable?

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx laptop with Windows 7 that is at least 5-6 years old. The product number shows as LW262UA#ABA if that helps out.

I just started noticing that the laptop isn't charging even when plugged in. When I release it from the charging cable even when plugged in for hours, it will almost die right away like it hasn't been charging when in fact it has been.

When I move my cursor to the charging symbol at the bottom right corner it shows "0% available, plugged in, not charging". And when I restart my computer it comes up with a screen on start up that says "HP Battery Alert. The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below is very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced. Primary <internal> Battery <601>.

I pulled out my battery and it says HP MU06 Notebook Battery. Regulatory Model Number: HSTNN-UBOX and there is a white label on it with a description that says: Replace with HP Spare. It gives numbers of 593554-001. Also says CT: 6 BUDQ 32 SM 0T 0AU.

So my question is, what do I need to fix this? Just a new replacement battery or perhaps a new charging cable? Which is the messed up one? And where do I specifically get this at? A direct link to one on Amazon or somewhere would be extremely helpful because I've tried looking and I can't seem to find the one that fits my exact model laptop and I don't want to make a mistake.

Thanks!

Hi @bd3616 ,

Use a DMM (Digital MultiMeter - DC Voltmeter function) to test the DC voltage output of the AC adapter.

Connect the meter's test leads across the adapter's inner and outer DC connector plug rings and switch on the adapter at the wall outlet.

The meter should measure 19V DC. It should be very close to this reading. If it is below about 18.75 V DC replace the adapter.

If the adapter tests OK with a Voltmeter, to find the correct battery for the laptop, simply search online using the battery part number that you have found on the battery, to find suppliers that suit you, i.e. ONLY type 593554-001 into the browser search term box. No HP, no battery, no laptop model number, etc.

The number corresponds with the spare part number for one of the three battery variants available for your laptop, as shown on p.59 of the service manual so it is the correct part number for your laptop

As you can see the only difference is their capacity

Description......................................................................................Spare part number

9-cell, 100-Whr, 3.00-Ah Li-ion battery....................................... 636631-001

6-cell, 62-Whr, 2.80-Ah Li-ion battery..........................................593562-001

6-cell, 55-Whr, 2.55-Ah Li-ion battery........................................593554-001

Here is a link to Amazon showing the battery as found by using the part number only search on Amazon.

It is not a recommendation to use them. It is shown to give an idea of how to find the battery and also the cost of the battery.

You will notice however that even though this battery has the correct part number its' capacity is less at 48Whr than your old one was at 55Whr, meaning that the laptop won't run as long when used only on the battery.

Search online for a battery with the correct part number (you know it will fit and work) but which has a larger capacity in Whr (Watt Hours) e.g. this one

Again not a recommendation. Your choice as to what you want to buy and pay.

Hopefully this is of some help

Ok thanks, that kind of helps makes sense but I don't have a DMM or know what that is.

In regards to the battery which I'm sure it is...I have a question. You knew to search for a replacement because my spare part number was 593554-001 because I read that to you from the original battery. But what if you get rid of the original battery and replace it with something else...how would you remember in the future that you need to search for part number 593554-001 again because that number won't be on the replacement battery? That make sense? Because if you go to the service manual, it doesn't say which of the 3 spare part numbers belongs to your laptop....You knew because I read it off my original battery. Or do all 3 of those spare part numbers work for my battery and that's how you know? But again, how would you ever know what your original part number was from your original battery if you end up getting rid of your original battery that had that written on it? (The 593554-001 number)

In other words if you didn't have your original battery anymore and went to the service manual for which part number, how would you know which of those 3 spare part numbers is the one for your laptop?

That make sense what I'm asking? Confused on that.

Hi @bd3616 ,

All 3 batteries are compatible with your laptop. It depends on what you wanted to use the laptop for and how much you wanted to pay for the battery.

The higher capacity batteries will run longer between charges, depending on what you are doing on the laptop of course

They will all fit and work.

The only thing with the 90W model is that the protuberance (bump) is bigger so that it will make the laptop sit up a bit higher.

Also it will obviously take longer to fully charge the higher wattage batteries than your original because they have a greater capacity. It means that they will run longer on each charge as well

I got the number from the manual first and then verified what you had stated what was on the battery.

This is what a DMM does

Thanks jayeff! You are really helping me a great deal. But again, let's say I replace my original battery and throw it out when it gets replaced, in the future how will I ever know that the original battery was the 593554-001 part that my laptop came with? I know I can always reference the manual and that all 3 batteries will work, but how would I ever remember that the original one was 593554-001 because the replacement batteries won't identify that and neither does any spot on my laptop. It only showed it on the original battery. Does that make sense?

So it seems your first link you posted is the closest thing to my original one right? Only that it is 48 instead of 55 WHR? I really would prefer something that is exactly like the one I have now so I don't want a 9 cell if it has a hump in the back. Why are there no exact 55 ones like mine is? Is this 48 first one you posted the closest I'm going to find? If so, how much bigger of a difference will I notice that it is 48 instead of 55 WHR?

Thanks!!

Hi @bd3616 ,

Write the part number in indelible ink, in the cavity where the battery sits. Alternatively make the part number your OS Login password. That way you'll definitely remember it!

There is not much performance difference between the 48 and the 55 as far as battery 'life' is concerned. It is more noticeable between the 55 and 90

Don't know why you can't get exactly the same, ask the manufacturers. You can only get what is available at the time and be thankful that you still can get something that fits and works

Ok thanks! I got one last good question. So if my service manual says only those 3 types of batteries listed will work for my laptop, then why does this Amazon product include my model number of 593554-001 but it's a 12 cell, 95WH which isn't one of the 3 battery types listed in the service manual? Not going to buy this one, just was curious on if this would have worked for my laptop? If so, why isn't it listed in the service manual?:

Hi!

As you suggested, you should start by replacing the battery. If that solves the problem, then you have nothing to worry about.

Laptop manufacturers usually design the batteries for their devices so that the same model of battery works with more than 1 product (this helps keep costs down and is fairly nature-friendly), so you will never find a battery that works with exactly (and soley) your laptop model.

Here's a link for purchase.

Thanks but I'm still confused. I clicked your link for purchase and saw that it's only like $20? Other ones on like Amazon seemed to be much more expensive and like $60 or more...you sure this isn't a rip off?

And I also clicked "read full description" on the link you sent which shows the laptops it's compatible for but my laptop name wasn't listed at all? So are you sure this is for mine? I see my laptop mode is listed in the title but it worries me it's not under "read full description" where it shows which models this is for. Because if it is for mine, why isn't it listed under "read full description?"

Thanks

Hi!

I have no idea why it isn't listed in the full description. If it doesn't seem legit to you, don't buy it, look elsewhere. And start by looking somewhere else other than on Amazon. Just google what you need :"batter for [laptop model] " you will end up finding a lot more stuff. I for one literally picked the first link that showed up there.

I'm still really confused on what to do. I don't understand what kind of battery I would need...I have tried googling it and it comes up with all different types that I don't understand. I don't know if it's legit or not, I just know the others seem more expensive...ugh I'm so confused on what to do. Someone please help! How do I know it's whether a problem with my charger or battery too?

Bump, thanks!

I suggest testing a different charger before spending 60$ on a new battery.

How do I test a different charger? I don't have any extras just this one for my laptop? How do I know whether it's a battery or charger issue?

Bump thanks!

I'm sure you can go to a electronic store and they'll allow you to test a charger out to make sure that the battery isn't the problem.

Do not change or check the AC power adapter, it is a bad battery. Replace it. The ones on Amazon will either be 3rd party generics (all those batteries you see in the $15-35 range), 3rd party name brand or genuine HP. The generics will more than likely fail pretty quick. For 3rd party "name brand" (eg. Duracell) you are also paying more. For genuine HP, you will be paying quite a bit more. If buying on Amazon, look at the reviews for the battery as well as seller feedback. That will give you a good idea of the quality of the generic.

This sounds like a faulty battery, I'm almost sure it's a bad battery.

Simple way to find out:

Do you have a light on the charger when you're plugged in?

If yes, it's the battery

If not, it's either your DC-IN jack, the charger, or the charging IC and/or related parts on your motherboard.

But... it's going to be your battery.
