Water on Motherboard Effecting Headphone Jack Audio

I have a self built computer, and recently a small amount of water was spilled through the top of the computer and onto parts of the motherboard. I immediately powered off the computer and set to drying off the parts inside. After getting all i could see, i put it back together. Everything worked perfectly fine, but now, about 7 hours later, the audio to my right ear is quiet compared to my left. First thing I checked was the headphones, they worked fine on another device and other headphones plugged in had the same problem. I took a look at the motherboard audio connector and three or four pins seem to have some kind of corrosion on them, as well as the connector. So i decided to test the motherboard audio output directly, with both the case connector connected and disconnected, each yielded the same result. Is there any way i can clean the audio connectors or something on the motherboard to fix the issue? Or if that doesn't work, could i buy a pci sound card and throw that in there and fix the audio problem?

Thanks

Hi,

Try using a Q-Tip moistened with Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available at most pharmacies) to gently clear away the corrosion and any remaining liquid from all the water affected areas. Do this with the power disconnected of course.

When you are satisfied that you have cleaned away all of the corrosion and that the IPA has dried, (evaporated) turn on the computer and check if the problem has been resolved and that hopefully the audio controller has also not been permanently affected.

A pci sound card will work if the audio controller has been affected or if you cannot fix the audio connectors as long as the pci slot has also not been affected by any liquids that is.

Here is a link that describes what to do.

Electronics Water Damage.

Also do not use "rubbing alcohol" if you can avoid it, as it is usually <70% IPA, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you have to use it check the label for the amount of IPA.

Thank you so much for the help! I took everything out, cleaned out the connectors and some of the pathways that looked like it might need help with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol and a q-tip. Put everything back together and started the computer up and..... same problems. I'm looking into getting a sound card now, i'm a bit of an entry level audiophile, and i'm looking into Sound BlasterX cards. Thank you for the help!!
