itunes doesn’t recognise my iPhone

Just bought a second hand macbook, softwares up to date and got lion. But when i connect my iphone to back up it just not recognise it and the error message i see is ‘ itunes could not connect to the iphone because an error occurred while reading from the device’ .. any help? thanks
