I have a standalone freezer (Whirlpool WSZ57L18DM) that is not defrosting.
- I checked the heating element and found that there is continuity.
- I also checked the thermistor. It had resistance of 2.3 kohms at room temperature and 5.7 kohms in ice water.
Do those readings sound normal? Is there anything else I should check? What part seems faulty?

Jack - Yes those readings sound good. If all the connections are good and tight then it must be the main control. Part #W10701810

Thank you. I tested the thermistor again and got very different readings. I ordered a new one and it has been running well for a week. I think if it’s still good after 2 weeks then the problem is solved.

We are having the same problem with the same freezer. I am wondering if your solution worked long term.

@mohamadkibrit the jazz board is an adaptive defrost control. I’ve attached a link that explained step by step how to diagnose it. They do fail quit often. When they fail the symptoms will be: the freezer is working but the fresh food section is warm. The evaporator coils inside the freezer behind the rear panel will be covered in ice/frost. You May notice the frost on the rear wall in freezer.

But my answer is if i can do the manual defrost and it’s working but the automatic defrost not working that means i have problem with the jazz control board or what...

@mohamadkibrit You’ll need to check continuity of the defrost heater and get the resistance of the defrost thermostat with a multimeter to determine of the heater and tstat are good. If you advance it into defrost mode, and the heater comes on, you’ll hear a sizzling noise from melting ice dropping on the hot heater. Then you know that the heater is good and the problem is the board. The board failed and doesn’t turn in the heater like it should. I attached a link in my last reply saying basically the same thing. I hope this helped.

Cause 1
Defrost Control Board
The defrost control board determines how often to run the defrost cycle. If the board fails, the refrigerator will not go into the defrost cycle. Before replacing the defrost control board, first test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. If the defrost heater and defrost thermostat are working properly, the defrost control board is likely defective.
Cause 2
Defrost Timer
The defrost timer turns on the defrost heater several times throughout the day to melt any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost timer is defective, it may not advance into the defrost cycle, or it may not send power to the defrost heater during the defrost cycle. To determine if the defrost timer is defective, slowly advance the dial into the defrost cycle. The compressor should turn off and the heater should turn on. If the timer does not send power to the defrost components or advance out of the defrost cycle within 30 minutes, this indicates that the defrost timer is not advancing. If the defrost timer is not advancing, replace it.
Cause 3
Defrost Heater Assembly
The defrost heater assembly turns on several times throughout the day to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater assembly is defective, the defrost system will not work, and frost will continue to accumulate on the evaporator coils. To determine if the defrost heater is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the defrost heater does not have continuity, replace it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. You provided a generic answer to a specific question. Does the thermistor reading sound normal? This unit doesn't seem to have the old school mechanical timer. It's all just one digital control unit from what I can tell.

I have maytag with jazz board and my auto defrost stop running i make manual defrost it’s working fine after 3 day my fridge was warm any idea or my jazz board is defective

Every time this has happened to me, it has been a blockage in the small hose that draws water from the heater pan into the evaporator pan.

Please verify the make and model number of the refrigerator which also has a freezer compartment or is it a standalone freezer?
There are no results when searching for the make and model you posted.
Is it an Ariston brand by any chance?
If so this doesn't show the model number that you listed either. Go to Models on left side of page and click on "more models".
