Loose screw / metal scraping noice, even after 4 repairs

When I bought my MacBook 3 years ago it made a strange metal scraping sound for a short while at the setup. But after that, I didn't hear it again until a year ago. It only appeared in specific situations (start of a Cinebench CPU test or when extracting a lot of small files like an update).

At the beginning of this year, I brought it to a certified repair center and they replaced the fan. When I came home and tested the laptop it still made the sound. So I took it back to the repair shop and the replaced my fan another 4!?!? times.

After those 4 times, I gave up on the repair process because I needed my laptop again. But the problem still persists. I have a recording of the sound.

The fans aren't the problem because when I run the diagnostics tool the noise isn't there. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? And do I have a problem if I open it up myself and take it to a genius bar anytime in the future?

Thanks in advance!

Your fan needs replacing. The fan blade is hitting the wall as its bearing is gone. Now the fun part which one is the one that needs replacing?? I would recommend downloading this app: TG Pro while it won’t let you control one fan over the other it will allow you to see them and hopefully give you an idea which needs replacing.

Here’s the IFIXIT guide you’ll need to follow for the Left fan: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Left Fan Replacement & MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2015) Left Fan

And here’s the Right fan: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Right Fan Replacement & MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2015) Right Fan

Well, as it told in the post. Both of my fans are replaced multiple times already. And when the fans spin up without any load there is no noise.

Clearly they didn't fix it ;-{ There is only one source for a mechanical sound and thats the fans.

The gap between the blade and the wall is very little so its possible they distorted the housing just enough in the replacement process.

Or they mixed up the fans so they re-installed the bad one in the process. I always mark the fan before I take it out so I don't re-install it by mistake.

At this point I think you'll need to make the effort if you want to get to the bottom of it. The fans are easy enough to replace. I would do one at a time that way you have a 50% chance of getting the right one the first time. If you buy from IFIXIT they will take the fan back for the other one.

Hoi Dion,

Hi Dion,

As soon as you change or disconnect something internally on the laptop, then your warranty from Apple has expired, even if you have it repaired by a computer company that is separate from Apple. Your only options if you want to keep the warranty are either Apple or an Apple Certified Service Center.

I myself have good experiences with Card Services in Zwolle, which are also certified as Apple Certified Service Center, but I do not know if you come from that neighborhood. It is indeed a crazy story, but you may have something to do with this.
