Will DisplayPort work when iMac's screen wouldn't work?

«Will it worth to buy external monitor when iMac's screen wouldn't work next time or not».

Hi,

I'm facing the problem when iMac's screen can suddenly become very dim, almost black with the full brightness scale and can return back to normal after lowering brightness level down to 1 point. I worry someday I won’t get back to normal brightness at all. It already happened once before and it took 6 months in service workshop to find out that the display itself needed to be repaired, such as dust removal and LCD contacts soldering after micro-cracks happened caused by overheating on LCD contacts. It was fixed and iMac returned back to its’ normal state but I could only use 1 or 2 points of LCD brightness, at least it could work. That's for the story.

The question is if it will happen again, could I use DisplayPort to connect an external monitor and will it work fine while iMac's screen wouldn't?

I want to mention my check of using DisplayPort in the first time when the problem occurred, I mean the iMac's screen was very dim, just almost black, I used my MacBook to connect it to iMac as external display via DisplayPort cable, and if I remember right, I couldn't see anything on my MacBook while it was powered on and loaded into OS-X.

So I'm wondering if DisplayPort related to iMac's display itself or the signal goes only through the motherboard and bypasses iMac's display. Will it worth to buy external monitor when the problem happens next time or not.

Thanks for reading my story and for your answers. Best.

Update (07/09/2018)

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I didn't mention in my story, that I tried to connect LED board from another used iMac with the same model and I also now remember, that the screen became black while the startup (but with the opportunity to saw something on the screen with a flashlight though very dimly) or it could turned to black at any moment in the loaded system or after some action in OS X, for examplle, after connecting USB-keyboard. With another LED-board the screen turned to black even faster at startup Apple logo than with it's native one, so I also thought that it's not the reason in this LED-board and returned it to its seller on the next day, I aslso thought that I just could buy a bad LED-board with the same issue that has mine or the problem is not with it and I tried to put another PSU-board as well and it also did not any changes. As for Target Display Mode I used Command-F2 shortcut to try to get image on my MacBook with DisplayPort adapter when the iMac's screen was black, but MacBook's screen also got black if I remember right, but I'll try to connect some monitor with miniDP-HDMI adapter and I'll try to catch the moment when iMac's screen will become dark again to check if I could see image on the external display.

I would first try screen sharing as it bypasses the internal display & the GPU logic to see if the issue is deeper.

The brightness of your display is controlled with the LED Backlight driver board iMac 27" Backlight Board, Mid 2010 - Apple P/N 661-5576. Here’s the IFIXIT guide to replace it: iMac Intel 27" EMC 2390 LED Driver Board Replacement That should allow you to regain the full functionality of your displays brightness.

When you use Target Display Mode you are accessing the GPU board services just like an external display would so double check this is working if not you have a second problem with the dedicated GPU board.

Here’s a useful reference on using Target Display Mode: Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode

The other option is screen sharing: Screen sharing overview. Unlike connection through the DisplayPort here we are connecting over a network (Ethernet or WiFi) between the two systems. It bypasses the GPU services completely.

I had the same problem with my system and replacing the driver board fixed it!
