What is the thickness of the thermal spacers for the GPU memory?

Good day,

I disassembled iMac 5K 27 Late 2015, M395X 4Gb to replace the thermal grease and clean the cooling system.

Tell me please: what thickness should there be thermal pads for video memory chips?

I bought these here Thermal Pad material for All Coolers

Thickness 1mm. Tonight I'll make an iMac and see :-)

Zaa495, what have you discovered about the needed thickness of a thermal pad for your iMac? Is it 1mm or different?

I have to order one tomorrow, but don’t know the right thickness. For iMac 27” 2017.

@zaa495 - Thats what I use for pads you might as well order all three sizes just in case.

iMac 27” 2017 has a gap between VRAMs and cooler plate around 0.75mm.

Should I use 0.5 mm or 1 mm thermal pads?

I would use the 1 mm pad material as you do want it snug.

Apple (Nvidia) has used a few different chips on both the GPU boards and logic boards so I can’t really give you an exact size here. And I haven’t needed to replace the newer retina iMac’s pads yet.

For reference: You’ll need on the older chips (GPU board in 2008/9 systems) .5 mm as they stand a bit high and the newest chips will need a thicker one either 1.0 mm or 1.5 mm.

The best way here is to measure the gap. Dry fit the heat sink and then slide in a few pieces of card stock or use a feeler gage into the gap. Then measure the collection of pieces needed and use the next size up as you do want it snug.
