iMac 27 late 2013 logic board in the late 2012 chasis

I have probably a bad logic board on my iMac late 2012.

Instead of buying a similar logic board, I have the thought of upgrading with a used full spec late 2013 logic board and put it in the late 2012 chassis.

  • Is it possible at all?
  • Has anyone tried this before?

Thanks in advance.

Just wanna Update that it is possible to swappe the whole imac component in the 2013 model into the 2012 chassis. And I did it without trouble. There is just some slight difference with some of the screws, so you just have to use the screws from the chassis you wanna swappe to Then there Will be No problem at All.

Hi Thien. Did you use an early or late 2013 board in the 2012 chassis? You're saying the screws were different? Will the 2012 chassis screws not work at all?

из

I don't remember, which screws I was referring to, as it's been a while since then. I do still believe it is possible with 2012 screws, but you might need to be creative when one of the screw does not fit perfectly.

Did you review the two IFIXIT guides?

From the surface the guides do appear to show the exact same layout of the logic board and the connections to it. If you compare the power supply and the display you’ll also see these parts are also interchangeable between the two series.

While I haven’t swapped out logic boards my self I think its a safe bet it would work.

But before you head down that path why don’t you tell us why you think the logic board is gone and tell us what the onboard diagnostic LED’s are telling you. Maybe we can pull a rabbit out of the hat here (it would be cheaper!)

Thanks Dan

I tried a blade ssd upgrade, but after the reassembly the iMac does not respond at all. The LED #1 has light, but when I do push the power button, there were no reaction or light on the others 3 led light on the logic board. While my original plans were to swap the blade ssd only, I was tempted to put new thermal paste on the cpu and gpu. I believe it's in this step that I screw up the logic board, as I was very careful on the other steps. The only means I have to know which is causing the failure, is to take it to a repair center for a diagnostic and a little fee of 40 dollars. Meanwhile I do research on the cost of spar parts and if it is cost effective to repair it.

I’m not a technician but I’m pretty sure that 2013 27” logic board will fit and work in 2012 27” chassis too.

Upgrading a 2013 model with a later model should not work just cause of not having that 5k display starting from 2014 model on.

Swapping or using the 2012 SSD blade with the 2013 logic board can’t work. The 2012 SSD connector is an 7+17 pin mSATA based one, 2013 SSD connector should be already a PCIe 2.0 x 4 connector.

@proofgoods - A few corrections:

The blade SSD's in the Late 2012 system are the same mSATA drives in the Early 2013 system.

It's the Late 2013 model which was the first with PCIe 2.0 x2 support. Offering AHCI/PCIe SSD's as well as support for NVMe/PCIe with High Sierra or newer if you replaced the SSD.

Many thanks for these corrections ! I didn t know there was a Early 2013 Version up so i talk about upgradinge logicboard from Late 2012 to Late 2013 Version.

But again like somebody wrote before it should work, its only a good bet cuz haven t done it so far but be on it pretty soon.

Well I need assistance. As I have a late 2013 27” iMac. I was told that my sensor that controls my fan probably is gone and a logic board it needed. I want to know what all newer boards can I interchange with. Might as well upgrade if am going through all that work. I’ve changed 3 fans in my system and none same to turn on. I did a hardware test and it’s telling me my fan isn’t working, when I do the extended test, the computer eventually just shuts down. Any ideas on my next step.

Did you ever resolve this question? I'm in the same boat and need a new logic board. It never occurred to me that I could use a newer board!

No I wasn't able to solve this issue. Have you and if you have already can you explain how it was done. Thanks

I asked in this thread, if it is possible to replace a logicboard from 2012 into 2013 imac and the answer is yes it is possible. My iMac from 2012 is now runner a 2013 max out logicboard and still kicking ass. With more help from the community I have discovered the problem with my faulty logic board from 2012 and was succesfull in fixing the problem with the fan spinning and cpu at 100%. (see the linked thread). If you need specific help. I think it best to make a separate thread with picture and information of what you have done so far. Something is blown, I need help to identify component on logic board

Devon.paul - we did fix ours but we replaced the 2013 logic board with another 2013 board. It's running great now, but we determined that a newer board would not work in the 2013.
