The backlight on my Kindle Oasis Model No. SW56RW no longer works. It will not get brighter, and it is too dim to read. I go to settings, and then to the Light, and press the light slider up and down, nothing happens. Can someone offer assistance? Can this be fixed?

You could try to factory reset the device to see if it’s a software issue. If that doesn’t do anything, then my best guess if that your LCD back light has gone bad and that you may have to replace the entire LCD assembly.

The only other option could be, take it apart, remove the screen and put it back and ensure that the connector on the ribbon cable is clean and seated correctly. The cable may have become positioned wrong from being knocked or dropped.
