Screen turns white but ONLY after the iPhone goes to "sleep"?

Hi everyone,

I recently did a front panel replacement using the iFixit kit on my iPhone 3GS and while everything appeared to work fantastic at first I faced the dreaded "white screen of death" after the phone'd gone to "sleep" mode. I am very puzzled by this because the general advice seems to be to make sure the connection is good which would make sense if the iPhone ALWAYS had a white screen (not the case).

The thing is the phone boots up perfect and both the LCD and the digitizer are functioning great... As long as I don't mind having the phone NEVER auto-lock things are wonderful... the moment the phone locks there's no way to "kick" it out of the white screen mode short of rebooting it completely [POWER + HOME button for 10 sec] but then the same behavior can be observed once again (crystal clear image immediately after the reboot, white screen of death if I let the display go to sleep).

I've tried doing a complete iOS restore in hopes that it's some sort of a weird software glitch [perhaps iOS didn't appreciate the digitizer being swapped on it, I had the phone powered down during the operation but still...] and sadly that didn't help at all.

Any & all suggestions are welcome & thanks in advance to anyone who attempts to help me out!

What about swapping the old screen back? Or trying a friends screen?(turn off phone with slide first) Same issue? 3GS have really sensitive backlights... Might be the problem here.

You need a new LCD. Be thankful that is it. Just 4 fun you could try a Hard Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons together for about 15 seconds until restart. If sleep goes white, then install new LCD with iPhone powered off.

100% correct, I was able to swap it with another display for testing purposes only and it worked correctly. I suspect it's the connector that somehow got damaged:

- which is why it would work initially but wouldn't be able to come back from sleep without going to the pure white screen. Another point of concern is that unlike the iPhone with the working display in mine the connector #3 didn't appear to be holding the cable in place [that's Speaker, Proximity Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, correct?] but I wonder if that even had anything to do with the weird behavior. I'm having same problem.

My logic board was overheating due to failure of chip for charging battery. So I bought another logic board for 3Gs over eBay. After putting it to my 3Gs i was thrilled to see it working, but after first lock/sleep phone gets WSOD and only thing that works to get out of it is to reset the phone. I'm still stuck with this problem.

Please advise.

I just had this same problem with an iPhone 3G, combined with random reboots on wake. I just replaced the proximity sensor and now it's working perfectly again. Maybe the #3 connector acts as a sort of ground... Either way, it's 100% working again. So, nickdotvr, it seems that the #3 connector can be the problem.

Just try a new one. Luckily I had 2 working spares laying around from old broken screens.

With the iPhone 3G rebooting on its own it could be the power button that misplaced itself. I was having the same problem after replacing the housing on my iPhone and after realizing the problem I just unscrewed the screws to the power button and pushed the chrome button itself (the one that you press to sleep/power off) up and then screw the power button back in. Power you device on and you shouldn't have this problem again!
