One game works fine others work okay and some don’t work at all...

Okay so I have a super slim 4001b model. It was dropped recently with in a bag which gave it some cushion, but unfortunately has lead to a problem. I’m curious to what had broke so I can replace, if possible.

My guess is that I need a new disk reader but would rather get a better hypothesis or answer before I go out and waste money.

Now I’ll be brief and tell you what I can tell you.

When start up it sounds like it tries to spin the disk but can’t and takes 3/4 attempts then finally continuously spins, sometimes with a little tap or two.

when loading game tends to make a weird noise, more so in games I already know it’s most likely not going to load

It plays all apps fine Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, etc.

the only game that work perfectly fine with with the exception of two weird lines that pop up for a sec seldomly, which I do not recall happening before, is Battlefield 4

MW3 survival game mode worked perfectly fine too but now experience very bad lag and time

BO3 works, sometimes with bad lag in zombies

BO1 does not when loading the game volume cuts in and out and freezes most of the time resulting in me having to $@$* of the console due to freezing completely and could take up to 10 try’s before it actually can load all the was through. Noticed that if I hold down the ps button on the controller and go to the quit game, controller assignment, etc menu that has a better chance of loading up with out freezing completely.

GTAV right after the drop incident, when trying to start would go to a black screen and couldn’t get out of it and the console would make a really bad noise like it was dumb or something. This weird noise happens with loading other games too. It usually tends to make the console vibrate.

Now after probably 5 months after the drop GTA now loads but after having to press X to pass the notice of a feature no longer available, to continue loading it freeze resulting in have to $@$* it off.

that’s really all I can tell you , and I hope at someone can help! Thank you!

Hi!

You said the console was dropped. This could have damaged both the hard drive or the optical drive. From what you told us, it seems like the hard drive is fine (as apps installed on it work), but some games do not. This leads me to believe that the optical drive is the problem.

With the console off and unplugged from the wall, open the drive (just don’t touch the 2 laser diodes). When the lasers are docked, they should be stuck to the motor that’s spinning the disk. Gently try pushing the laser assembly towards the motor. Now try spinning the spindle with your fingers. Does it spin easily?

If you can’t find any problem, replace the laser lens assembly. (not the entire optical drive, as these are paired with their respective motherboards - so a new one will not work with your motherboard even if the part is the same)

Follow this guide to see how to do that: PlayStation 3 Super Slim Laser Lens Replacement

You can buy the replacement part here: https://amzn.to/2N24Tdc

I also recommend that you get one of these toolkits if you do not have the tools.

Hi.

It could be a few things.

First, I’d guess you need a new optical drive.

However, first, in case the optical drive lens is dirty, you could try to gently clean the lens, with the power disconnected, with a very soft, lint free cloth, with just a dab of isopropyl alcohol on it. Don’t use too much!

Gently wipe the lens, The little clear glass circle that sits under the disk itself, using as little effort as possible.

If that fails, also check the connector cable from the optical drive to the mainboard, unlikely but worth trying.

If that fails, you’ll probably have to replace it.

You can probably pick one up on Ebay.

Alternatively, you MAY be able to use a USB optical drive, but I’ve never tried, you’d have to research that one…

Next, I’d remove the internal hard disk, then plug it into a windows system via SATA, or USB, if you have a USB to SATA adapter, and test it for bad sectors, problems with the heads, etc.

The hard disk manufacturer should have free tools on their website to test it on a windows system.

Otherwise, any program that can read a hard disk’s SMART status can tell you if there are any bad or pending bad sectors. If there are any, you should replace the drive.

One simple, free program is Speccy.

You can download it here for windows:

https://filehippo.com/download_speccy/do...

A system reading a drive can slow down, in the order of hundreds or thousands of times slower, whenever it encounters a bad or slow sector, which could cause the lag, and cause some games to fail altogether.

Other times it may not be able to read the file with the bad sector on at all.

Furthermore, if the read heads have been damaged, then all files can take significantly longer to read, if at all.

Standard, i.e. non-SSD, hard disks are remarkably easy to damage via dropping, unfortunately

You can pick up a hard disk (2.5 inch Serial ATA HDD ) on Ebay, or from most computer shops.

Failing that, the unit may have had its heat sinks dislodged or warped, causing the unit to overheat…

This would require complete disassembly, and then testing the temperatures , and if required, removing the heat sinks, cleaning, applying new thermal paste, and reassembling.

If none of that works, then there may be damage to the motherboard itself, which means you’d need to either repair that, or, buy another unit altogether.

Before doing that though, I’d probably reset the unit back to factory defaults, just in the off chance that it is not related to being dropped. That will of course wipe out any settings, games, files, you have on there though.

Hope this information helps.
