Buying Parts for MacBook?

Hi, I’m looking to buy a new keyboard or topcase for my MacBook Pro and have found these very cheap listings from China. Why are they so cheap? Are they real and if so do they differ in any way from the expensive original Apple parts? Thanks.

What happened when you went to Apple to get your keyboard fixed under the extended warranty?

These newer keyboard are much harder to replace than the older retina models as such I would recommend you get an uppercase which already has the keyboard installed (2nd hand part)

I spoke to them on the phone and was told that late 2016 models aren't eligible?? Even though it says online that they are, so I went to a local Apple retailer and they looked at it, but declined because of attempted self repair. Other unofficial repair shops quoted me from £250 to £299 for a keyboard replacement which is just too much for me at the moment.

All I can think of is getting a new top case from China and replacing it myself, but I'm not sure if the products I linked are even real? They look too good to be true, only £140 for a top case with a keyboard and new battery. At this point I don't really care if it's gonna function as well as the original Apple keyboard, I just want it to be cheap and working.

Do you think the products I linked are worth buying and I won't get scammed?

I've not used any of these parts yet as I was lucky enough that the few bad keyboard systems I had gotten in where fixed by Apple.

Frankly, I think you'll need to try again. As in my mind it's to big a risk. As Apple had committed on fixing them under the extended warranty.

Clearly, the person you spoke to was feeding you BS. I would call Apple Directly and have them ship you the needed packing to ship it to the Apple repair depot Vs dealing with the local dealer or repair shop. The dealer would be doing that for you which is why he didn't have the incentive to do it.

Do take the effort to minimize the visible signs of your self repairs, so Apple doesn't turn you down.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention but I was told that the "Mail-in service is unavailable in your region", I'm in the UK. Is shipping directly to Apple only a US thing? If so then I really don't know what to do because my local Apple certified service centre declined, and the nearest one is quite far away so I'd be paying to travel there.

@visionary - What part of the UK (island/nearest city).

Lets see if we can do better for you. There's got to be a way to get this done without putting your system at risk.

Those are aftermarket spares, they will work but do not expect the same quality level you find on original parts. Keyboard will work, but will likely require a somewhat stronger and more precise pressure whereas original parts are more forgiving. If you are a professional writer you might dislike or even hate a replacement KB, most users would hardly notice, it really depends on your style and expectations. Topcase is quite certainly original, but it might be refurbished with aftermarket parts, you will have to ask the seller for confirmation and details. If I have the chance, I prefer using for my repairs 2nd hand original spares rather than new aftermarket.

I've been told by a repair shop that "The new keyboard must be bought as programmed, otherwise the function keys will not perform the function on the top row of keys (brightness, volume change, etc)." is this true? If so how would one program it to work?

из

Function keys model just stands there as opposite to Touch bar, to differentiate the two models available for sale at the same time, however function keys have been there on Macs forever and to activate or not the function there's the Fn key on keyboard, acting the same way as the shift key, that's all. Everything is handled by the keyboard and the relevant IC on the logic board. I wonder what kind of programming the repair shop was thinking about, maybe it's just my ignorance but I never heard anything about it.

As @danj correctly pointed out, be aware of this service program in case your issue is eligible: https://www.apple.com/uk/support/keyboar...

@arbaman - TouchID power button? But thats easy to swap over which you do need to do.
