I stand by my previous comments. I cannot upgrade to OS Sierra 10.12.4 on this Mac running on El Capitan 10.11.6. The 15 inch MacBook Pro was returned to Apple when it was still under AppleCare. Don't try to teach your Granny or Grandad in my case to suck eggs.

I did not delete my posts, because the information I posted was correct.

Don't preach to me about learning. I went to University when I was 34 years old and graduated with a BSc (Hons). I got my Master's degree at 67 at Lancaster University, and am currently studying for a PhD in IT and Applied Research.

There is a patch to update your MacBook Pro operating system to High Sierra macOS. Follow this link to reach that request:

Mac post 2011 can upgrade to osMac 10.13.2. Within weeks, there was a security update for some Macs, then a OS upgrade for 10.13.2. Here in UK we are ripped off. If it costs $1500 in US, it will cost £1500 in UK, and cannot buy from US if UK resident.

This appears to be your machine:

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 13" (SD/FW) Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2009 13" - MB990LL/A - MacBookPro5,5 - A1278 - 2326*

It will take 8 GB of RAM

Here's the specs on it: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ma...

Now the question becomes, "how much RAM do I really need"? Besides the cost, you significantly reduce your battery life and increase heat. Here's a nice article on how to tell what you've used and if you need it: http://macintoshhowto.com/hardware/does-...

James, would you care to back up either the first or second part of your comment? Because I don't buy either part of it.

Sorry, I made a typo. The latest version of Mac OS is OS Sierra 10.12.4

If you click on App Store, there is a download for this version, but trying to upgrade it gives a message as follows We could not complete your purchase. This version of mac OS 10.12.4 cannot be installed on this computer.

Currently, I am running on El Capitan 10.11.6 on a MacBook Pro mid 2009.

I have a 13 inch MacBookPro retina ( early 2015(, running on OS Sierra 10.12.4

also a 15 inch 2011 MacBook Pro running OS 10.12.4, my wife laptop, and a mini iPad which will only upgrade to iOS 9.3.5.

I have been using Macs since 1992 and worked from home as a Apple Athorised Technician. At 76 years old I learn something every day.

James, the question was about a mid 2009 machine. I suggest you go ahead and delete your comments. All you have done is muddy the waters by bring in a 2015, 2011 and an iPad on this question.

I have the same issue with my Mid 2009, Macbook Pro 15 ", 2.8GHz Intel Core 2Duo with 4GB (RAM) 1067 Mhz DDR2; running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. I still have 247.62 /GB free if 499,25 GB avail; but continually get the spinning beachball on almost every application. If I go to 8 GB of RAM will that help with eliminate the spinning beachball and slow everything?

lenmar Please ask a new question as this answer is 6 years old and you are dealing with another issue.

Thanks for sharing information. I am a Mid, 2009, macbook pro, 5.5. I moved to Captain, with just a 2GB RAM, I am finding that the mac is not fast, It is so sad to see my buddy to underperform.

Hence, I am considering to increase RAM to 2 2GB s each. Can some one share light on it. Thanks in advance.

I will say that 4GB of RAM for Captain will work but it is slow, 8 GB is what I would recommend.

In my experience with my Mid 2009 Macbook pro Up-Grading to 8GBs RAM was very beneficial . I would strongly recommend 2 chip sets of 4 GBs equaling 8 GBs of total RAM.

You mean El Capitan as Mac has never had an OS called Captain

Hi,

I did it and it is working great. Only problem is, one of the memory slots is dead, hence after putting 2x4gb RAM it only recognises 4gb. Both memories work well (I switched them around and the dead slot is always the same) Does anyone know if it is possible to put an 8gb memory in one slot instead of 2x4gb?

Thank you!

Hi,

actually I had the same problem I guess, before water damage this summer, I was using my both slots (1st was 1 gb, 2nd was 4gb - I was thinking getting my 2nd 4gb for this semester:( and I was thinking I finally had 2x4gb=8gb ram )

however now if I use top slot giving me "3 successive tones, a 5 second pause (repeating): This indicates RAM does not pass a data integrity check." Error, so I am assuming my top slot is not working.. I am planning to get 8GB 1 Ram but I wonder this is OK.

And if you learn answer please let me know too,

thanks

I also own a mid-2009 Mac Book and I managed to upgrade its RAM to 4GB (2 x 2GB) and to replace its HDD with an SSD. The next step I would like to make is to upgrade its RAM to 8GB (2 x 4GB), but when I write this message (in 2016) I cannot find DDR2 RAM’s any longer, leaving apart that they are fairly expensive. I would also like to replace its processor with a stronger one, say an Intel i3, i5 or even i7. Does anyone know if its motherboard supports such processors or where can I check this?

Thank you in advance.

Hi, Daniel,

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro and had it upgraded to 8GB RAM within 2 years after I bought it. At an authorized retail store, where I bought it. No problem. Except that it also has the original 160 GB HD. Performance is not great the last year or so, wondering if it would improve with a 512SSD HD, and upgraded OS. Currently 10.6.8. I did replace the battery once, but did not notice extra heat with the upgraded 8GB RAM.

The 8GB RAM has served me well. I'm no techie, but I would guess that the OS, HD and RAM all would affect performance in different ways. Anyone know???

@r1alice - There is a bit of symbiosis between RAM & drives. When your system is running lean on RAM it will leverage the drive as virtual RAM. So if your system is low on free space you won't have that much space for the virtual RAM in addition over time HDD's tend to get fragmented so the free space maybe heavily scattered across the drive which slows access.

So what to do?? The easiest thing here once you've maxed the physical RAM is to upgrade your drive to a larger unit. But even that may no offer enough. As it turns out there are hybrid drives (SSHD) which have a deep cache SSD to speed things up. But we have a small wrinkle here, the drive you need is no longer being made so you'll need to look for one on eBay or Amazon. You what to look for a Seagate ST1000LM014 SSHD You don't want the newer FireCude version! It is a fixed speed drive unlike this one which will run at the slower SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) speed your system runs at. Your other option is to get a Samsung 850 EVO SSD while more expensive will also offer great performance
