Can’t activation iPhone without carrier update

Verizon has some carrier service installed on an iPhone 6s Plus I just bought. I factory restored it without knowing about it, and now I can’t activate the iPhone without a carrier update. It’s a little tough to get an update from a carrier when any sim I put in says NO SERVICE…would installing a custom or older ipsw?

Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

I can’t answer you specifically about Verizon related issues as I’m not on the US side of the ocean, but I can tell there are no custom firmwares for the iPhone, nor you can downgrade to an older iOs version as Apple doesn’t sign anymore anything older than iOs 12.1

Since it seems you have a carrier locked iPhone, you could buy a report on your iPhone status, easy and cheaply found on ebay and the likes to make sure what’s the exact situation concerning lock, blacklisting, etc. With those info you’ll have a better picture about your real options.

Some sell legal network unlock services, but yet again no idea about Verizon in detail. No idea if it’s legit in North America, but you might have a look at Rsim as well, with all the caveats of the case.

Google is your friend for info about it.

The US carriers do have ‘Carrier Updates’ which are exclusive to each carrier: What is this 'Carrier Settings Update' on my iPhone, iPad?

The iPhone you have was originally setup for the Verizon network. Besides the SIM your phone also has other files and settings which are biased to the given provider your phone was bought from originally. You’ll need to visit a Verizon reseller to see if the phone can be unlocked from the carrier legally. Often times these phones are flash listed so they can’t be used on other cellular networks.
