Small black thing on MacBook motherboard NEC CN7

Hello, while using my MacBook the other day it started crackling and smoke came out of the keyboard. Everything seems to be working with the exception of the wifi. I figured the wifi antenna fried. However when I opened it up to investigate there is a small black capacitor or diode that fried on the main board. It has NEC CN7 on it. Where can I buy this? I am having a hard time trying to find out what this is.

Can you give us some background on what happened.

How about posting a good clear image on the burnt component and the area its located and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

If you can I would recommend you first try to get Apple to service this under warranty before attempting to fix this your self.

Well I was using the Macbook to surf the web when she decided to start sending up smoke signals. It is about a year and a half old. I did not buy the extended warranty. I also do not have an Apple store I can just run to as I live in Guam.

This is probably my last Apple product I will ever buy. $2000 and it didnt even make it 2 years. My old white macbook still works and its 11 years old. I was at one point Apples biggest fanboy but this and another issue with my iphone losing all cell service has left a terrible taste in my mouth.

The NEK CN7 is a resister not a capacitor

@slimfitz

that is a 33uF 20% 16V Tantalum-Poly capacitor in a Case-B3 package.

Besides having the schematic it helps to know how to determine this based on the marking.

NE C

NE for NeoCapacitor

C Production Date Code (Capital C = manufactured in Mar. 2017

CN7

Rated Voltage 16V

Capacitance 33uF

Positive Polarity to the left with two lines of markings =B case

Datasheet from here

Thank you very much. Now I just need to find one. Funny thing is this probably only costs about 10 cents

Here is a search of Mouser showing compatible ratings from the same manufacturer of the original part. Be sure to confirm the dimensions with the datasheet before ordering.

It’s a tantalum capacitor. I haven’t located what the rating on that should be.

similar to this:

If anyone has a datasheet for this model, they can get you the Farad / Voltage ratings.

It appears to be in parallel with another capacitor. Usually (not always) when they place 2 in a set like that, they have the same rating. You might check the rating on it’s neighbor and compare it to the values for the pair a bit to the left.
