Help me please my computer wont read my drive?

Ok so my drive is a 3tb Toshiba external drive and worked fine, great actually till a couple days ago when I turned on my computer I noticed it wasn't registering in my pc so I unplugged then re plug in and it says over and over your drive has malfunctioned please try reconnecting USB device not recognized. My entire 15 years worth of work has been transferred on here and nothing will work, tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the device and drivers, I just don't know what to do how can I get my information out of this drive…someone please help

Update (12/13/2018)

I did try in two other computers, same thing? Is it hopeless, is there any way of getting the information off?

Hi @ sarah54755,

Try the solution suggested by the question’s “bizarre way” in this link. Hopefully it may also work for you.

WD my passport ultra 2TB is not showing up on explorer..

If it does stay connected long enough to retrieve your data, do that while you can and then consider that the external drive is failing and needs to be replaced

I am sorry that you are facing this issue. I know how important the data that has been saved. In this situation, we need to make sure if the issue is with the computer or the hard drive. So, check these things:

  1. Try connecting your external hard drive to any other computer. If it does not recognize there, it is the issue with hard drive.
  2. If the hard drive works fine in the other computer, try connecting any other device to your computer and check if that detects work fine.
  3. If no device recognize on your computer, there seems to be some issue with the USB ports or with the Operating System.

Analyze these things and identify the exact issue in the computer and then it becomes easy to proceed with the troubleshooting.

I would also try taking the hard drive out of the case and plugging it directly into a motherboard… If that doesn’t work there are companies that can retrieve data from damaged hard drives… When you get your little guy fixed I suggest backing up regularly to a cloud service… I think everything will work out fine for you it’s not as bad as it looks.

All great suggestions however those companies want 1500 just to start Ive looked everywhere and a cloud service for that size is way to high of a cost for my low income family but thanks, I will try the plugging into motherboard, so how do i oen the case, will that break it more, thanks so much for you help

Hi There,

I had this happen to mine as well. If I recall, something came out of the drive such as the cord. Even after putting it in a different case, it would not read the drive. Basically, it went into needing a fix mode, which could have been done but I had a passcode on it and it would not allow me to access the login to get into it.

It did not tell me that it needed to be unlocked with a code, so you wouldn’t know otherwise.

I just recalled that discovery. Did you passcode it?

If so, I do think you can get your data off of it. I was quoted $300 from a local computer fixit shop. They weren’t sure if they could get all of it off…

I had backed up most of that so I just let it go. But….I know your pain.

If you didn't passcode it, the only thing I came across as a solution was to be sure to assign that drive a letter. You can do that manually in the computer, just do a search on that. K, let me know how that goes!

A single external hard drive isn’t enough for backing up files and folders. There could be data corruption. I only fix these issues using a Mac. You should take the drive out of the enclosure if you can and put it in a dock.
