Unable to power up after it slept

Suspecting that it's either in deep sleep, faulty power button, or fault motherboard.

Last used watching YouTube and left unattended until it slept. I managed to wake it up briefly before the screen went black and have not be able to power up since then. MagSafe seem to intermittently work but should not be a battery power issue since this event took place with almost a full charge.

Tried resetting SMC and PRAM but to no avail. Wondering if it's just a component issue that can be replaced myself.

Update:

Part replaced successfully and was able to power up! As requested, here’s the screenshots.

However while I was typing my update here, the MagSafe light went off.

I tried another MagSafe charger (a fully functional MacBook’s charger that is borrowed) and it could charge! Plugging back my own charger, the MagSafe did not light up.

Here’s a screenshot of coconut battery after the last sentence above.

I also have a lot of static on the top case. So much that I am currently typing without my palms touching it. I wouldn’t be surprised if I let my mac sleep or shut down, it wouldn’t want to boot back up again…

Please help!

Update 2: 20 Jan 2019

Here’s the screenshot of what I have noted since the beginning of this issue.

Anyone with any insights to what could be the issue here (aside from checking wall outlet grounding) please feel free to comment!

Appreciate all and any time spent to help.

Thanks!

One of the biggest misconceptions is the system runs exclusively off of the MagSafe or the battery but never both together! Which is not true! Running heavy loads or when you have a bad DC-In board will often pull power from both which can cause issues.

Review this Apple T/N Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters make sure you’ve got the correct charger and the cable and connector are in good shape. If you have any cable damage or the MagSafe pins are damaged you need to get a new charger! The risk of the system being damage is quite great if either are true.

From the sounds of it you likely have a worn DC-In board, here’s the needed part: MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Mid 2012-Early 2013) MagSafe 2 DC-In Board and you’ll need to follow this IFIXIT guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2013 MagSafe DC-In Board Replacement.

Once you get the system running again download this app coconutbattery take a snapshot of the main screen once with the MagSafe charger plugged in and a second when you’ve disconnected the MagSafe charger. Paste both here for us to review Adding images to an existing question

Hi Dan, I've done the fix and updated my post with the screens. Please take a look - any idea what else could be the problem?

из

At this point you have a bad MagSafe charger! Likely a clone charger not a real Apple unit!

- Counterfeit Macbook charger teardown: convincing outside but dangerous inside

- Lacking safety features, cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks

I'm suspecting the static you are encountering is a bad MagSafe unit that is hot! So you could get electrocuted if you touched a water pipe or other good ground, getting a nasty zap or worse! Don't use this unit anymore and destroy it so it's not used again once you've proved its bad.

Check your power outlet is properly wired and has proper grounding as well as your breaker panel to ground connection (you might want to get an electrician in to fix things)

I'm just reviewing the timeline on the functionality of the magsafe charger:

1. Day 1 of macbook refusing to wake up with magsafe plugged in - working

2. Day 1 unplugged, then plugged back in - not working

3. Few days later macbook able to turn on - not working

4. Same day, got a brand new original (as claimed by repair shop) charger - working on new charger

5. Next day can't boot up/awake again - not working on new charger

6. Replaced DC-IN - working on new charger

7. Same day, while typing reply on ifixit - not working on new charger

8. Same day, tested working magsafe charger from a borrowed laptop - working on borrowed charger

It's just not consistent in telling me that the charger is a counterfeit or is the problem but I'm not sure myself! I have however suspected the outlet to be the issue. Perhaps a grouding issue as you've suggested. Will get an electrician to check and get back to share the results.

Meanwhile, take a look at the timeline above and let me know what you think!

I would focus on the outlet's power either its mis-wired and/or the ground line is hot.

Hi Dan. I have not engaged an electrician to check the outlet's grounding/wiring but have new troubleshooting info as shown in my updated post's image, row 12.

Do you still think its got to do with outlet power with this update?

Hi ronnel, I noticed that's the keys to reset the SMC. But surely that can't be the solution everytime it happens?

Latest observation, I was typing my reply and the screen went black. Seems like the power got cut completely all of a sudden. I'm on the move now so I can't plug in to see if the charging is functional but resetting the SMC didn't help.

This is so frustrating.

In that case if you can o a battery reset on your mac and then reset PRAM.
