Bright flash on shut down...

Hi, I recently installed an SSD and additional 16Gb of RAM to my 2011 iMac (specs below). My sytem is running beautifully however I have noticed when I select ‘Shut Down’ and the computer is closing down, there is a bright flash from inside as it finally closes. I can’t say that I’ve noticed it before. Any ideas what’s happening there..?

How did you install the SSD replacing your HDD or adding it as a second drive?

Hi Dan,

I added it as a second drive and installed a new operating system on it. I can still see and use the old drive

This iMac specifically has GPU issues. Not saying that that is what is happening but you could be on the verge of having a GPU issue. Things that might have started that is if you installed new SSD without setting up someway to keep it cool like Mac’s fan control or installing the special cable that monitors the SSD TEMP and connects it the Logic Board.

My guess is you GPU could be on it’s way out. Do an easy restore of just your OS and see if the issue is fixed. Maybe the install you did on the new SSD is corrupt in some way. Worth a try to get rid of variables.

Update (03/12/2019)

Hi. To reinstall the operating system really all you have to do is hold down the command key and the R key To restart in recovery mode. Can you have the option to re-install whatever operating system is installed on your Mac. This will only re-install the base operating system and leave all of your files and applications in tact. Sometimes in order for your applications to work properly you might need to do a couple of updates after you re-install a base operating system

Can I do an uninstall of the system on the original hard drive? How do I restore my current SSD operating system without having to replace other software?

The restore of the OS only does the OS and leaves the Applications and user files alone
