Black screen, laptop still has power. Was working on monitor.

Hi there.

So, yesterday I was working on my laptop with it hooked up to a monitor and all of a sudden the screen goes black, but not as if there was no power, it was still dimly lit but it wasn't showing any icons or anything.

Now, if I hook it up to my monitor and close the laptop lid, it will display fine on the monitor. But if I open the lid then the monitor display goes grey (but I can see and move the mouse curser) and the laptop display is still black.

Then today, it began working fine again until I tried to exit fullscreen from a YouTube video and then boom, black screen again.

If I start up the laptop I will hear the sound, the back apple logo lights up and the keyboard lights up, all as normal, only the display is black.

I have tried all the SMC and PRAM resets but to no avail. Anything else I can try? Maybe a loose connection since it started working again and then stopped? I am praying it is something that I can fix myself and don't have to fork out ££ for.

Little update - It now works when plugged into the monitor again. The laptop screen stays black, but I can use it to type and use the trackpad.

Sorry about your Mac! Attempt to first update your OS, as his may well be a bug.

When you had your computer plugged to a monitor, did the flickering carry over to it? Or was it only on the Mac’s built-in display?

Hey. Thanks for the reply. How would I go about updating it since I can't actually use the laptop?

Sorry could you explain the last part again? What do you mean by flickering?

No worries! So, if you connect a screen to your laptop, do you see the same flashing/flickering on the external screen?

из

There is no flashing or flickering at all. The laptop screen is just black.

Okay, then this is likely a problem with the display module. You may want to try to reseat the display cable (as illustrated in Step 10 of this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Display Assembly Replacement )

I will be honest: this isn't likely to fix the issue-- only rarely does this work. If this fails, you will need to replace the display on your Mac.

I'll give it a go. How much would it be to fix? Roughly?
