Will not boot, no startup sound, dead but charges battery

This is a 17" MBP A1212 2.44Mhz. There is no startup sound. Nothing happens when I press the power button. The MBP charges the battery. No chime, no light, no fan, complete silence. I tried the reset PMU, changed RAM to make sure and about every trick Mayer suggests on other similar topic. Have no idea where to start! Can it be the DC-in board even if the battery charges?

Thanks. The computer is already shut down since it does not start up. I cleaned and reseated the keyboard to logic board cable. It does not seem to react at all to the power button.

I opened the MBP and found the "PWR BTN" connector and shorted that with a screwdriver. Then it started up normally. There is no reaction from the keyboard whatsoever. Not from the mouse, keyboard or power button. I was able to connect a USB mouse and keyboard and they work fine. How do I fix my keyboard problem?

из

There has been no liquid spill on it. The Magsafe lights normal, the battery charges fine.

из

Any idea as to how I can check the keyboard. There is no response from the keyboard, trackpad or power button.

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

Shut down the computer.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

Turn on the computer.

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Release the keys.

If nothing happens, reseat the keyboard to logic board cable.

Are you getting a light on the Magsafe adapter? Any lights on the battery test button? Has it been exposed to liquids?

из

Did it start or do anything else when you jumped the PWRBTN pads on the logic board?

из

It starts up fine when I jumped the PWRBTN pads. And I can use external USB keyboard and mouse.

из

Forgot to write that after this fine startup it still does not respond to the internal keyboard, trackpad or power button. But like I wrote I can use an external mouse and keyboard.

из

You have a bad upper case, replace it.

If you can start the computer by shortening the PWRBTN on the logicboard i guess that something has fried your topcase. Try to get another one. Sometimes the USB contoller underneath the trackpad fails, but that wouldn't affect the power button. Carefully check the flatband cabel that connects to the board. From the distance i suspect that to be the culprit.

I have no idea how I could have fried the topcase. Is there any part I can buy (i.e. cables) or do I have to buy a complete top case?

Hello, I would like to suggest to you to get another ribbon for your entire top case cover. Chances are that there is a "BREAK" somewhere within that ribbon cable (most likely right at the connector head). These type of cables can only stand so much bending, if you keep bending it up (as in removing the top case cover a lot) you can cause a break at critical points on that cable. You can go to EBAY and purchase a use one for a minimal price since it is not a highly sought after item.

Update

Hi, you can obtain that ribbon cable on ebay, the cost will not be that much at all since it's not a "HIGH" selling item but you will find some there. Now in "jumping" that cable to see if it is shorted, well I would not attempt to do that due to the possibility of creating another problem elsewhere in that electrical circuit. It's worth the wait.

Hi, I can't seem to find this ribbon any where. What do I search for? Do you know anyone selling only the ribbon? BTW. shouldn't I be able to short the connector in some place to simulate pressing the power button? In that way I could check if the connector was ok.
