Dishwasher drains only when water in the bottom has cooled.

My dishwasher is barely a year and a half old. Model number WDT720PADM2 that has worked great until recently. It runs the cycle perfectly and then there is water in the bottom at the end. If I go and manually press the “Drain” function it will make a noise like a murmur but not drain. If I wait a few hours until the water cools (the pump even), it will drain just fine.

I don’t want to rip the pump out before knowing, but is it possible that the pump gets overheated during a cycle and won’t properly work until it cools? I took the drain line loose thinking that was the original culprit and it clears well on it’s own (I blew in it and had no issues). I ran vinegar/baking soda through it a few times as well to help clear that even more.

I have the same issue with ours. Will only drain manually once the unit has cooled. Drains fine at that point. It’s not an issue with the plumbing being backed up. I’m thinking either the controller or drain motor itself. I’m wondering if it’s because we use the sanitize option and that is what is causing the drain motor to heat so much.

из

Anyone ever resolve this? We have the same issue with same model. I don’t believe that it’s the motor overheating as the draining only happens when the water is stone cold, e.g. left overnight. Leaving for, say, two hours does not fix it, even though the motor would be well cool after two hours.

BTW, I’m a professional engineer and pretty handy and there’s not much I can’t figure out and fix, but this one has me stumped!

No I am still running it as I have been. I have put off replacing anything just due to the fact that if I put a fan in front of the unit and remove the lower cover it does partially drain sometimes. I have no doubt the issue is something related to a thermal overload switch. The warmer the weather the longer it takes to allow it to drain. Last winter most of my loads would drain just fine.

As to your observation about the water being stone cold, yes I noticed the same. I think that whatever is being tripped must be close to the water and the water keeping it warm and open until it reaches whatever the threshold is.

I have the same issue with a Maytag. Must be a Whirpool brand issue. Works every time once cool. End of cycle the clean light is on but there is what appears to be the full amount of cycle water - cloudy water in the bottom of the dishwasher. I don't run the dry option.

@Tooncination

What is the model number of the dishwasher?

I’m still working on the cause.

Dishwasher Water in the Bottom of the Tub. Some water (standing water), usually one to two cups, remaining in the bottom of the tub is normal. Is this your case?

Hey never got a notification on this. It's been ongoing still for a year. The cycle drains early (I can hear it in the sink), but at the end the dishwasher is full of water. If I wait until the water has cooled, it drains just fine. At times the dishes still have detergent on them because it's not draining well at the end of the wash.

@russellran12 I would suspect that you have an issue with your home plumbing draining slow. The hot water would have nothing to do with draining. Or, you could have a pump motor overheating and cutting off and when it cools it comes back on.

If the water in the dishwasher has an odor it could be that the drain is backing into the dishwasher. The dishwasher will wash, drain, wash, drain several times in the cycle. You should hear it drain several times, not just at the beginning.

Hey thank you for the response. The water doesn't necessarily have an odor, but it still has detergent and it's not clean. I feel it's the motor overheating, but I don't want to rip it out until I have a more definitive answer. Again once it is back to room temperature it runs just fine. It also drains early in the cycle (I can hear it in the sink). It's just as it goes through and heats up it stops draining.

The motor is probably overheating and once it cools it’s good until it overheads again.

I have the same exact issue. Sometimes (1 out of 25) it does a cycle. Most times, it aborts and displays the clean light. Many times it just aborts (no light). Always there is a full load of water leftover (even if it ran the dry cycle.

What I do, is run a cycle (with normal dry) and watch it to see if it gets to the dry cycle. If it does, or the next day, I do it again and it drains (soapy water; because I can feel it between my fingers in the disposal). It drains with a 1-2 second stream twice followed by about a 10 -15 second drain (water must be about room temperature or it does not drain). I let it complete that cycle on its own and then I feel the dishes are rinsed. I then let them cool and put them away. Later I drain the leftover water by letting the washer cool down, start a cycle, listen for the 3 drain cycles (while verifying the water is present and feel NOT soapy) and re-open the door and cancel the cycle.

(2/2) I have come to the conclusion that something (the drain motor?) gets too warm and just does not work. I have heard the dishwasher stop and make sounds ( I think I hear) like trying to drain 3 times and then it starts to run ( I can hear the water) for about 1-2 seconds, it pauses and then repeats the process. I assume (eventually) it cools down and drains but I am not sure (the process takes too long for me to wait around to see). I got on this to see if anyone had the same issue. This thread is OLD what happened? I would love to know.

из

@headdog It does sound like the drain valve is overheating. There are no sensors that would prevent it from draining. The water temp needs to be at least 120*f throughout the entire cycle for the detergent to dissolve properly.

There is a thermal sensor inside the drain motor on my Frigidaire, it was installed down between both coils but probably should have been outside where the space in the housing is...mine won't drain when hot either. This is a commodity pump made by various Chinese vendors so manufacturer quality can vary greatly.
