iPhone X restarts every few minutes after back housing replacement.

I replaced the back housing of a cracked iPhone X, a repair I’ve done many times to older model iPhones (from dents or cracked model 8 glass). All functions on the phone work, there are no issues with it other than it keeps restarting every 3 minutes or so. I have tried a hard reset as well as disconnecting and reconnecting all the internals.

Is this a motherboard issue? I’ve never experienced this problem before. I would assume if it’s as serious as the motherboard being damaged that I would have other issues.

The dock flex cable needs to be replaced. The cable must be original!

из

I also faced this same issue several times. Not sure what to do next in order to recover this issue. Thanks!

из

@Максим М I does not have to be original, it just needs to be of good quality and also have a temperature sensor on it to keep the device from having a kernel panic.

из

@timothysheridan more than likely you just need to find a good quality replacement charge port

из

I had the same issue for me 2 iPhone X. I purchased a new back housing from eBay and it came with all the small parts The phone keep off and on every 2-3 mins after installed the motherboard in. No matter what I do. I transfer all the original small parts from the older iPhone X to the new housing still not fix the problem. So I think the new housing problem ?. I send it back to the seller and they send me a new one then it work perfectly for me. Happened 2 iPhone X was the same issues for me. Hope this help.

When doing a housing swap you should transfer as much of the original internal parts as possible.

Make sure that you have transferred the original CHARGE PORT to the new housing, this should solve the issue.

Hey everyone. I know this thread is like super dead but instead of making a new one I will just post what I found here.

After a lot of searching, I found this thread here that we are on and that lead me back to this being either a motherboard issue or an issue with a 3rd party flex cable. I REALLY didn’t want it to be a motherboard issue on top of the fact that I was very careful in handling the motherboard as I know breaking it would lose all data and require FaceID replacement as well. So I held out hope.

After reading about another similar issue I read a post that gave me the idea to check crash logs or system logs to see what might be causing the crash. Sys Logs were a bust as they only showed active processes, so I moved on to crash logs/dumps which apple so graciously provides us with under Settings -> Privacy -> Analytics & Improvements -> Analytics Data.

Now that I was there I only had a few minutes before the phone would restart so I had to act fast but there were so many different dump types that I had no idea what the names meant. Some were app specific referencing the AMC Theaters app while others were Aggregates from the day prior. I was able to see that there were a lot more dumps from one specific type, and that was called Panic-Full. This got even more interesting when I looked at the most recent timestamped file under the many many panic-full files that were dated and timed the EXACT MINUTE the phone turned off and subsequently turned on.

After a few quick google searches, I found this Apple support thread from Oct 2019 with one particular post that was pretty recent (Jan 2020) from a user by the name of HydraKiller and it went like this

Jan 7, 2020 9:49 PM in response to mosa144

Related to the charging flex cable port, Solved this simply using an original salvaged charging flex cable, 100% fixed. Some aftermarket charging flex cable aren’t working on iOS 13.x, They’re messing with something related to the thermal system, and forcing a kernel panic. (PS=The phone will keep restarting without any charging port, too).

to which the OP responded

Jan 15, 2020 12:23 AM in response to HydraKiller

Your reply saved my phone!

Hope my experience + your solution can help others...

Had some water spill onto the phone while charging which was discovered too late. Phone would no longer turn on, and the USB port looked damaged. Removed the screen and discovered that water traveled into the bottom of the phone so I removed major components from the bottom up until I could be sure all was dry and then let sit 48 hrs to be sure.

Phone finally powered back on, but went to recovery mode and requested I plug into itunes. itunes could not resinstall iOS and kept giving me 4013 error.

At the store, Apple said my phone was gone and to buy a new one - "nothing they could so." A local repair shop said $150, and they could replace the motherboard, but couldn't guarantee anything. FYI, replacing just the motherboard also means FaceID stops working as the camera and board are tied together.

However, since the source of the initial issues was the charging port, I bought a new USB flex and lo and behold, Itunes was able to reinstall the iOS! After patting myself on the back for the $8 repair, I reassembled the phone but discovered it powering off every 3 minutes to the dot. Spent hours trying to diagnose, and ran into many posts about the 3 minute restatrt, but no solutions. Much was attributed to a bad motherboard. Finally stumbled upon this lone reply which suggested my "new" USB flex was actually bad, which was further supported by iOS diagnostics error log showing me that every 180 seconds it was shutting down because it was getting a thermalmonitor error.

Long story short, another new $12 USB flex later from Amazon, and my iphone X is now completely operational.

Basically all this is saying is that sometime after IOS 13 got released, something in that update caused the phone not to recognize one or more of the thermal sensors that are part of the flex cable connected to the charging port. From what I can read by the OPs final post he did not end up getting a refurbished/salvage flex but he was able to opt for not the bottom of the barrel when it came to replacement parts and got out just fine. On top of that if you do not have a known good OEM charge cable even leaving the cable unplugged causes this kernel panic.

I am still looking to see what cables are readily available for purchase and I will get back to you with a link.

Here also is a link to the original apple thread.

из

Hi I am in a pretty desperate situation right now. Did you ever find those links? Or even just telling me where you found the one that worked for you on Amazon would be super helpful. Thanks!

из

Just to clarify, the phone will be fully operational with an OEM charging flex, even if it's not THE original charging flex? Do you know if the same goes for the wireless charging assembly? I am planning on just swapping the housings from two completely original and unopened iPhone XS.

Thanks for the info!

I had the same issue after back housing replacement, this post actually helped me a lot. Another guy mentioned that he has the same problem after charge port replacement. Eventually figured out that it was the charging port that came with the new back housing. I carefully removed the old port and put that one and it’s working fine.

One thing I noticed that the original charging port comes in 2 pieces and the pre-installed one was only in 1 piece, two pieces were soldered together which was probably creating this weird power glitch!

Hope this helps, good luck!

I have the same problem, I bought 2 back housings and installed them on 2 different iPhone X. Both have the same problem. I unplugged the flexcable of the charging port but the problem is still there. Does it make a difference when I switch the charging port altough its not connected and still have the problem

из

OK remove the mother from the housing and try to connect just the battery and lcd and charging port and see does it still restarts

из

this, I'm sure this was at least part of the issue.

(latest update as of july 2020 didn't help)

I also had not transferred the wireless charger flex, so I went back and swapped that and the charge flex over.

So I'm not 100% sure which one fixed it, probably both.

My lesson is transfer EVERYTHING you can from the original chassis, because apple sooner or later is going to find another way to screw us repairers over.

I have this same problem. I emailed STS Telecom about repairing my device and he informed me that sometimes the iPhone X will reboot with a ripped or faulty charge flex cable. He also mentioned that a lot of the iPhone X models will reboot if it doesn't have a working cable plugged in. As I have this same problem I Have ordered a replacement dock connector and will keep you guys updated and let you know if the problem is fixed!

Definitely want to hear back about this. I just replaced the charge port flex on an iPhone X (old one had issues staying connected when plugged in) unfortunately I ripped the original flex while removing it from the housing and am unable to test that.

из

Today I received my new flex cable, I just finished installing it, and it was a success! I have done a full test with the new cable using the app “TestM”, the charging/headphone and microphone function seem to work perfectly! I am no longer stuck with it rebooting after 3 minutes! I will leave a link to the cheap “Premium” replacement cable that worked for me!

I think this would be caused by a torn cable for something in the phone. Try just getting the board, screen, battery and charging port and see if it boot loops then. If it doesn’t problem solved. If it still boot loops go through the process of elimination. Replace the charging port, battery, screen and it non of that works it’s a board level issue.

This is absolutely caused by the AM charging port. I’ve installed multiple XS/X AM charging ports and after the phone is powered on, it will reboot every 4-4.5 minutes until you pop the original one back in (that is - unless you damaged something along the way).

For charging ports I’ve learned my lesson: always use a premium, OEM part. This is not a part you want to cheap out on. It’s a pretty time-consuming repair already; just spend 4 extra bucks for the Apple (used/refurb/whatever) part.

Hi, I know this thread is a bit old but I’ve come across the same issue and I’ve been looking everywhere for answers and this is the closest I’ve gotten.

I had my screen replaced back in January and I think the screen the guy used was really bad quality as a few months later it started glitching a bit but I didn’t mind and then a few months later again it started restarting randomly for half a day and then was back to normal but now it’s doing the same, restarting exacctly every 3 minutes and it’s been like that for 3 days now. Tried to have it fix but the 2 different guys who looked at it couldn’t understand what was happening and barely had a good look so I’ve decided to take matter into my own hands…

Pulled the analytic datas reports and found lots of Panic Full logs. I’m not really an expert for apple devices (as I’ve always been annoyed at how much secretive they tried to be under their devices) but it seems there might be a problem with one of the thermalmonitor… So would that be the same issue with the charging flex that needs to be change? If yes, could you recommand me a good one on ebay or amazon ?

Hey Ellie, had this same problem but it was after I replaced my charging module with a crappy Amazon one. Is it possible that the charging cable was also replaced? If so, using a premium charging cable replacement from mobilesentrix fixed the issue for me. In general, I would reccomend paying a little extra for premium quality parts. I learned this the hard way haha

из

Thanks for replying ! As far as I know, only the screen was replaced, but I tried to go back to where I had it fix and found out they'd closed down... and unfortunately I live in the uk so can order from mobilesentrix but thanks for that

I've done some more digging and since my panic report says that it's the Prs0 sensor that's missing, the problem seems to be definitely around the charging port. I'm gonna try to find someone who's familiar with replacing that or last resort learn to do it myself since I've already done half the work finding the problem haha

Hi yesterday I finished a housing replacement from an iPhone XS. Today I just got a message from the phone owner that the iPhones keeps booting up. I used the pre installed dock connector from the supplier, inside the housing. I hope this post will help.

Okay, replacing the original dock connector fixed the issue!

Hi everyone,

Hello everybody,

I have an iPhone XS on iOS 14. I replaced the back glass of my phone and after that, I had the issue with the phone rebooting every 3 minutes. And also my phone was very laggy when the cameras were connected to the board. So a did some research and check the analytics report and found there were many “Full Panic” reports. I did not understand what was happening. I wrote in some forum but nobody was able to help. Until I found this.

I went to a repair shop and bought a “Used Original iPhone XS charging port”. Then went home and assembled everything. And Voila, all the issues were resolved. No more lags and no more reboot after 3minutes.

I hope this will be helpful.

I had my iPhone XS Max glass replaced the day before yesterday, this too meant that it had the laser etching to remove the glue underneath the glass.

I started using my phone and it wouldn’t switch off unless it was being used. It was happy to stay on the lock screen for hours.

i took it back to the shop, they took the motherboard out and placed it in a chassis with a known working charger flex and battery.

Still broken.

the motherboard was tested. Guess what? Dead Charger/usb IC. I believe that this is common but I’m unsure how laser removal of the back of the phone could have shorted this chip?

don’t quote me by this but the chip you will need to replace is a U3300. All common and found in the iPhone 8 up to Xs max.

hope you got it sorted

Had it shipped out to our motherboard repair team, they were too busy to tell my what they had to do but would love to know what goes wrong so i can fix it myself next time.

из

@Damply it's the charger flex....We've replaced (well, tried to) 6 in the last few months, and they all do the same thing. As soon as we put the original port back in place, it stops cycling. Please let me know if you find a place to buy original oem charger ports.

I’m having this exact issue. Ugh! After spending a lot of time disassembling my phone and swapping the port connector cable, it reboots after 3 or 4 minutes. I had ordered a cheap part from eBay because I’ve done that a lot to fix phones in the past but I ordered the iFixit cable this time and will try to write back to let you know if that one works. It costs a lot more but this might be a case of “you get what you pay for”.

Update (11/20/2020)

FYI, I can confirm that the part from iFixit works and my phone is good as new now!

Hi Guys, i had this exact issue too, iPhone XS Max restarting every few minutes following a housing replacement for a customer. ordered an OEM quality replacement charging port flex from ReplaceBase for about £10 and its solved the issue! I’m so relieved, thank you to the people on this thread!!!

Also just to say that i transferred over the original Apple flex to the new housing and in doing so must have damaged it, much to my surprise. Next time I will use heat and a more careful touch!

Take care guys.

Hi, I got this problem after replacing a rear back glass with heat gun, I accidently removed the LED from the Power Flex Cable and the phone kept restarting exactly every 3 minutes. This is not strange because the phone checks for that specific cable every 3 minutes, also other genuine parts, if they are missing it will restart. You check this by going into General-Privacy-Analytics & Improvements and finally Panic. It shows that there’s something missing, that will be your culprit.

I replaced with 3rd party flex, still restarted every 3 minutes. So I soldered the old LED back on the flex, which I thought was broken because the LED literally cooked on the inside. For 4 days I’ve been failsearching this phone, literally braindead at this moment because of it. And the phone finally works normally, although it now fails to find Mobile Network… I restored the phone and can’t go pass the activation phase, I’m getting warned to contact Apple support, this is just ridiculous.

In Short: Power Flex Button culprit, 3rd party flex won’t always work, try find genuine or fix original. Sometimes Port Charger culprit, so literally anything that has a sensor and has to be identified by the IOS every “X” amount of minutes.
